I am renting a car from AutoEurope this summer to drive from Provence, France to Florence, Italy. I am using my Amex car for the rental as they offer premium car rental coverage for a small fee. However, Amex does not insure car rentals in Italy, only in France. I am wondering whether I may purchase insurance for the Italian portion of the trip from AutoEurope. Does anyone have experience with this and can give me advice?

Have you checked with Amex? They cover rentals if you're using the Platinum card, business or personal, so I don't know why they wouldn't cover you using any of the other Amex cards. If they don't, then it's time to rethink our relationship.
Most credit cards exclude coverage for Italy (which is mandatory) and Ireland. I'm not familiar with the coverage of a Platinum AmEx, but Gold AmEx doesn't cover Italy.
Call Autoeurope to find out if declining the CDW for a portion of the rental is even possible.
Hi LL,

Best thing to do is to call AE.
When we did the same thing, except rented in Germany and drove to Italy, AMEX said that they'd cover the Italy portion since the rental originated in Germany. As it turned out, we had a minor accident in Italy which AMEX covered with no hassles.
This was in 2011, so unless something has changed dramatically in the past 14 months you should be fine.
Hi Lillian. I also have used the Amex Premium Car Rental protection. And it does not cover in Italy as I found out last year.
But I would call the program because telechick makes a good point.
This is the direct number I used, I believe, when I have had questions.
1-800-528-4800.
