We will be in Iceland in two weeks and we will be flying up to Akuyeri and then renting a car for 8 days. We will eventually make our way down to Keflavik to drop off the car. Does anyone have any tips for where we can get the cheapest (understanding that nothing is really cheap!) car rental?

We have rented a couple of cars in Iceland, and shopped around quite a bit. We found good prices from Átak Car Rental (www.atak.is/), and Hasso (hasso.co.is/). Also, there are a couple of discount car rental sites that include Iceland locations, such as AutoEurope (www.autoeurope.com).
The problem is doing the one-way rental, which some of the lower-priced companies will refuse to do. We looked at Alp Car Rental (www.alp.is), which had slightly higher prices, but I did notice that they have an office in Akureyri. Also, check out Geysir Car Rental (www.geysir.is), which was recommended to us, but we don't have any direct experience).
We booked the car through Avis, and it was far cheaper than any other company that we looked at locally and internationally. We received a quote of $430 for an 8 day rental, with a one-way rental. All of the Icelandic companies came in at about $800!!!
