car rental in Fort Williams, Scotland

Hello,
We are a family of five that will be traveling from London to Fort Williams on the Caledonian Sleeper train. When we arrive we would like to rent a car or small van that is large enough for 5 and luggage to drive one way to Oban. We would need it for two nights and would prefer to leave it in Oban. From there we would like to take a bus or train to Edinburgh.
Can anyone suggest or give any advice on car rental agencies in Fort Williams or (alternatively) know of any private person with a van that we could hire to drive us and show us Ben Nevis and Glen Coe on the way to Oban?
We are traveling there next month.
Thank you in advance!
Nalisa

Gemut for Ft William -- I think not . . .

nalemma: What you want would be unusual and I'm not even sure it is possible. Ft William is not a big city w/ vans available for rent as a rule.

You probably should have booked the train to Glasgow and then from Glasgow to Oban. I suppose you can depart the train at Glasgow - but you'd have to transfer Glasgow Central to Glasgow Queen Street station to catch a train to Oban (the stations are less than half a mile apart).

Oh - meant to add -- a van may not be readily available in Oban either - though this place does say they have them.

But If you are based IN Oban you wouldn't really need a van. Since the luggage would presumably be at the hotel, you'd just need a mid to full sized car to day trip around.

Why not, janisj? I've used gemut's services in Sicily, Croatia, Turkey, France, Spain.... I can't see why they wouldn't help with Scotland, and if they can't all it will have taken is an email....

Having a few free minutes during Tour de France commercials, I googled car hire in Fort William and they have several options with pick- up at train station. Remember that Google is almost always your best first step in researching a topic. Check it out and, if still necessary, come back here for further advice.

My concern is that small local rental agencies in Ft William either wouldn't have vans or wouldn't allow one-way rentals or both. Worth googling though.

kja: gemut does all their car rentals through Autoeurope so if one is going to rent why not go w/ the main site? Plus Gemut's site is harder to use -- and you have to e-mail for a quote, whereas w/ Autoeurope you get the full prices w/ a few key strokes.

Unfortunately Ft William isn't an option w/ either Autoeurope OR gemut (since there are no national chains)

"gemut does all their car rentals through Autoeurope so if one is going to rent why not go w/ the main site?"

Well, for one thing, I've never found a rate as low as the one quoted by gemut -- and that includes every possible discount I could apply given my various memberships. And for another, I like having 24/7 access to someone who speaks English and will help me resolve any difficulties that arise.

I've never asked gemut to find me a car to rent in a city without Autoeurope; I'd be curious to know what they would do in such a circumstance.
