Car or train for Italy's Lake District

We plan to spend a week in September touring lakes Maggiore, Como and Garda in Italy. Is it possible to move from one to another by train, or a car is necessary?

Yes each has more than one railhead and each has, in season, including Sept frequent boat service around the lakes - look at day or longer boat passes. No need for a car to enjoy these lakes, which, i think are best seen by boat if you ask me.

If you plan to see all 3 of those lakes then it is possible by train but better with a car. I have done it 4 times with a car.

Probably what I am trying to ask is if there is a direct rail connection between the lake areas or you have to change trains, in Milan for example.

Marchy - You will normally have to change in Milan - although there are a couple of direct services daily between Como S.G and Desenzano-Sirmione on Lake Garda.

For all timetable info see:

Hope this helps ...##Steve
