Capri in July

Hi - my fiancé and I have a day on our honeymoon where we can explore Capri in July. We are staying in Sorrento and were thinking we would take the ferry over to Capri in the morning.

Any tips on taking the ferry?
What are the top things to see?
Do we need to take a tour or is it best to explore on your own?

Any tips would be appreciated. It's our first time to Europe.

Thank you!!

If you are only going for the day, then be flexible -- see what the weather is like.

No need to take a tour unless you want to.

Please get yourselves a good guidebook or two. In comparison to the cost of your trip, the cost will be nugatory. You will learn what you can see and make your OWN choices, learn how to get to various places, and learn all sorts of things that you don't even realize you need to ask.

Enjoy!

You should research what there is to do on Capri and then decide on your priorities.

Some people think the Blue Grotto is worth the time to wait for a boat, motor to the grotto, wait to enter, motor back to the dock, all for a few minutes in the cave. But if you only have a day, you might rather have that time for other things.

We enjoyed the chair lift from Anacapri to Mt. Solaro. On one trip, we rode it back down and on another we walked back down. Again, it's a choice of how/where you want to spend your time.

I loved Villa San Michele, and on a beautiful day you could spend a few hours there, seeing the museum, exploring the grounds, enjoying the views.

If you want a bit of a hike, you could take the paths from the piazza in Capri, along via Tragara, to Pizzolungo and the Arch.

Some people just like the people-watching and shopping in Capri town. Others might prefer to take a private or organized boat tour around the island. There are other grottoes that don't get the crowds the Blue Grotto does.

In July you can predict lots of people lining up to get on the boats to Capri, so plan accordingly. Once on the island, the great majority of people disembarking will be making a beeline for the most famous attractions, so you might keep that in mind too.

Also you can predict that it is likely to be hot under the July midday sun, even though it is an island, so keep that in mind.

You won't have any trouble with seasickness if your prone on the hydrofoil to Capri, but some people prone to seasickness report they ended up feeling quite ill while waiting, inside a boat, to enter the Blue Grotto. (You get inside a boat and wait your turn to enter the small grotto, and if it is a busy day, with a long wait time , and with other moving boats making waves in the water -- all under the broiling sun -- if you've eaten too much breakfast (no orange juice plus espresso) ....

Also, if you are afraid of heights, be aware that some mini-tours of the island by car or bus travel very vertical roads, along cliffs. No point in paying for a tour where you end up shutting your eyes 80 percent of the time...

Before I went to Capri I had heard a lot about the kitschy tourist shops & large crowds, so I psyched myself for that experience, and looked for ways to break away from some of it, which is possible to do, and I'm glad I did.
