Capri Day Trip - How Much Can We Do?

We are planning on staying 4 days in Sorrento, and want to take a day trip to Capri. We would ideally like to take one of the earliest hyrdrofoils there and then one of the latest back to Sorrento. I've been researching what I would like to do on Capri, but I have no idea how long any of it will take so I don't know if it is actually possible to do it all!

I would like to do the following:

Villa San Michele
Mount Solaro and Church of Santa Maria a Cetrella (take the chair lift up, then hike back down)
Augustus Gardens and Via Krupp
2 hour boat tour around the island
Blue Grotto

We are young, healthy, and in good shape so walking/hiking isn't a problem for us. But how much time will this take? And how would you suggest doing it all? Is there anything else you recommend for us?

Thanks!

The most important thing is to find out the times of the hydrofoils bak to Sorrento. they don't run in the evening - so you will need to leave Capri fairly early.

I would rank yuor sight since I don;t hink you will get to everything. And the first thing is to determine if the Grotto is open or not (if the sea isn't perfectly flat youcan;t get in).

I agree with NY -- and although Capri is small it is not supereasy to get around from one place to the next. I found a website that maps out an itinerary for a day for you, taking in most of the sights you mention http://www.initaly.com/regions/campania/capri.htm

Does this sound like a reasonable plan:

After getting off at Marina Grande, look for a boat tour that does the Blue Grotto. After the tour, take the funicular up to Capri and eat lunch. Then do the Augustus Gardens, walk along the Via Krupp down to Marina Piccola. Then take a bus from Marina Piccola to Anacapri. Then take the chairlift up to Mount Solaro and explore up there (how much depends on the time). Then take the bus back to Marina Grande to catch the hydrofoil back to Sorrento.

I'm glad you are doing the Blue Grotto first. I've been to Capri twice and both times I was unable to get in due to rough seas. You might want to look at a forecast and choose a day when seas are expected to be calm and the tide will be low that morning. I hope your luck is better than mine.

ChrisandSarah,

This is what I did when I stayed 2 nts on Capri on my last trip:

Earliest boat from Positano to Capri - Marina Grande
Arrived about 10:30 am
Private, convertible taxi up to my hotel in Anacapri (Belvedere***, would not recommend)
Quick lunch
Chairlift up Monte Solaro & back
Villa Agustus (gardens better than Villa)
stroll Anacapri, Chiesa San Michele
dinner and collapse

Day 2
Boat tour around island (no Blue Grotto, rough seas) LOVED this tour, best part of the visit
Lunch in Capri
Hike up to Villa Jovis
bus back up to Anacapri and hotel

Leave next morning
hydrofoil scheduled for 9:00 am didn't show
waited 1.5 hours for next one

I hope this gives you some idea of what's possible.

Buon viaggio!

ChrisandSarah: On my day trip to Capri, we had almost the same plan in mind. We did the boat tour to the Blue Grotto right away, fabulous, loved it.

And then we went up to Capri and had a lovely lunch. Then took the bus to Anacapri . . . but by the time we got to the chairlift, we realized that we didn't have time to up and come back down. We had to turn around and get back to Capri to make the last boat and we got there with little time to spare. I don't know how we lost all that time, too much futzing around I guess (one of our party was a shopper and didn't take well to "let's go, NOW"), but if you want to get up the chairlift and back and make the boat, you need to watch your time carefully. Although we missed out on Mt Solaro it was still a great day and I would not have passed up the Blue Grotto for anything.

Our first trip to Capri we landed and immediately took a boat to the Blue Grotto. By the time we returned and we took the funicular up to Capri it was time for lunch. We looked around the town a little (really a little) then walked out and visited Villa Jovis. We got back to town in time to go back down and catch our hydrfoil back to Sorrento.

This may sound "snooty", but honestly I believe that no one has really experienced Capri unless they spent a night there -- walking through the paths after all the day trippers leave, watching the sunset or seeing the moon over the water, having a drink or dinner in one of the outdoor cafes or restaurants, strolling under trees and blossoms. It's ethereal. Capri at night is a totally different world from Capri in the daytime. Is there no way you can give up a night in Sorrento for one in Capri? Most hotels in Sorrento will hold your luggage and you only need to take a small overnight bag with a few necessities.
