I'm planning to visit Capri from Sorento on Aug 27, a Monday. Any advise please?

A day trip from Sorrento to Capri is pretty straightforward. Do a search on these boards as these questions have definitely been asked before. (My most recent vacation included the Amalfi Coast, but I didn't go out to Capri or I would provide details myself - sorry!)

Yes, just go early to Marina Piccola in Sorrento where the ferries leave, to beat the crowds. I know there is a schedule somewhere, usually each 30/60 mins.

Do a search for Capri here and you should get more info. We will be there the second week of June again, can't wait.

Take a ferry or hydrofoil from Sorrento. If you want one of the early departured, by your tickets a day or so in advance. I would buy a return ticket also or at least make sure of the return schedules. Ferries don't run late (7pm or so) and you don't want to get stuck on Capri overnight.

What to do in Capri? You need to look at the possibilities in a guidebook and decide what you would most like to do.

We're not shoppers and don't like crowds, so when we have done this, we didn't even go to Capri town. Also we were not interested in the Blue Grotto or boat trips around the island.

What we have done was head immediately for Anacapri where we enjoyed visiting the Villa San Michele, the San Michele church with the lovely majolica floor depicting the Garden of Eden, having a relaxed lunch in a cafe then riding the chairlift to the summit of Monte Solaro where the views are spectacular.

If I ever go back, I would like to see the Villa Jovis, the villa of the emperor Tiberius.

We took the hydrofoil from Sorrento to Capri in the month of September for one day. Capri was packed with tourists--almost shoulder to shoulder. There were many designer stores which did not interest me as I am not a shopper. We did visit Anacapri which was busy but not as much as Capri. We were glad to leave the Isle of Capri although many posters on this Forum have enjoyed the evenings on Capri.

We stayed on Capri for 3 nights and really enjoyed the late afternoons and mornings before the day-trippers arrived. If you are going only for the day, follow the advice of MaineGG and head straight for Anacapri which is not as busy as Capri town.

We've done day trips to Capri - and they were wonderful - but it was in late May. Took a launch and visited the Blue Grott, did a boat tour around the island, took the funicular up to Capri town where we shopped (picked up some very nice paintings from a local artist), had a lovely lunch and spend an afternoon visiting the Villa Jovis.

Naturally - this was on 2 days - not one. And I'm sure mid summer would be much more crowded. Agree that ferries/hydrofoils don;t run back after about 6:30 or 7 pm - so make sure you know the schedule and have a return ticket.

Capri is an ideal day trip from Sorrento. As others have told you already, get an early boat to Capri and the latest one back. Purchase the return ticket in advance. You have lots of things to do there. We visited the Blue Grotto (overhyped but ok to do), Villa Jovis, Villa San Michelle, did the chairlift (nice view).

I recommend that you do the boat trip around the island. Very beautiful. Avoid the company called Laser Capri though, if they are still in business. They tell you that Blue Grotto is included to attract people and when they get close to it they tell tourists that there is no time to do it. I read about it in multiple reviews and it happened to us, too. There was an elderly couple with us who were in Sorrento on a cruise. They were so excited about the Grotto and so disappointed that they missed a "once in a lifetime opportunity to see the Blue Grotto." When we got back I went to their office and told them I would put a negative review on Internet because they lie to tourists. They got so scared, it was funny. They took us and the couple back to the Grotto and waited for us to see it.

See if you can check when the cruise ships are in Sorrento, because Capri will be alot busier during that time!! In retrospect, I probably would try to hire a private boat tour, because the trip out to the blue grotto was a traffic jam, and we didn't even get in to see it. The gas fumes from the boats were nauseating. Once we rounded the island toward the Arches, and the White/Green Grotto, it was much better. I would have preferred to do that side only, and skipped the first hour and a half.
