Cappadocia worth it?

Planning to see Istanbul and the SW coast. Have the opportunity to spend a couple of days in Cappadocia for an additional $500. is this area worth the extra $$? Would like to see the underground cities but afraid that they will not be as advertised. What else would you recommend seeing in Cappadocia?

Karen,
It's without a doubt the most amazing memorable place I have visited. Yes, it looks like the picture, only more so. You can visit some of the cave homes as well as tour (lots of climbing) some of the ancient hideouts. (There are also cave hotels). I would not miss it.

M.

Karen,

If you have a chance to go to Cappadocia... take it... please. In all of my travels, it is one of the most fascinating, not to mention magical places I have had the pleasure to visit. I will never forget getting off of the bus in Goreme and watching the sun rise over the town and its fairy chimneys while the call to prayer was being shouted from the Mosque in the middle of town. An unforgettable moment and an unforgettable place. Note - the underground cities while definitely cool are probably the least not the most interesting things in this area... The open air museum in Goreme as well as simple walks through the Valley of the Fairy Chimneys are tops.

Have fun in Turkey... It's an amazing country.

Hi Karen, I agree with what the other posters say about Cappadocia. We were there last summer. I checked out various sites for tours, hotels and the best price I found was with Gate one travel. Its called a Turkish fling and it was about $200.00 for 2 nites, 3 days and a great guide and driver. We did pay extra to fly in. I really think if you can get there and book your own hotel, you can find tours for about $40.00 and hotels for any amount between $25.00 and $50.00. Anyway, Cappadocia is worth it.

I just came across a travel newsletter that had a 2-week Pasha tour in March for something like $900. I took a similar tour from them March last year and it cost $1300. It seems Turkey's tourism is suffering and all sorts of incentives are being offered now. Depending on when you're planning to travel, this may be worth considering.
