Canterbury and Kent
I am looking for a place to stay next summer within easy reach of Sandwich, England. Someplace with nice ambience where I can bring my wife and 2 kids for a few nights, enjoy a local pub or two, take a few nice strolls around the town and countryide/beach. Found a nice looking bed and breakfast in Canterbury, but wonderig if their is another town/village/inn in the area that is a real gems. I have heard of Rye, but it looks too far from Sandwich (I will be going there and back Sat and Sunday). How about Sandwich itself?

Broadstairs, on the coast near Sandwich, may be your cup of tea - check it out. Charles Dickens lived there once i believe. Sandwich is OK too but no longer on the sea - one of the old Cinque Ports but now the port is silted up.

I like Sandwich. It is a nice small town. Not on the coast but still a nice town. I'd choose it over Canterbury any day.
Rye is too far away.
Walmer and Deal are Ok, Broadstairs too, but you will probably want to avoid Ramsgate.
Ash is also a nice little town, inland but not far from Sandwich.
Richborough Roman Fort near Sandwich is worth a visit.

I'd value hetismij's take on this a whole lot - she knows of what she talks IME - i have been to Sandwich dozens of times and it is a nice enough old town - just my druthers would be to be on the sea itself - my personal desire.
If in Sandwich long enough take the coastal footpath up along the famous golf course along the sea to the top for rave views and then down to Deal on the other side - then you can easily take the train or a bus back to Sandwich.

Thanks for the heads up TCC, but that is exactly why we are venturing to this part of the globe at that time (that and the fact that we love British pubs and a good pasty).
I think we have found a place in a broad stairs sort of way, but I don't want to cintalize you with the details
