Cancale or St Malo?

Hi everyone. We decided to spend one of two days we have in Brittany in Dinan. However from previous comments we still are not sure whether to spend the second day in St. Malo or Cancale on our trip in May next year. We love the ocean and beach. Is St. Malo part of the emerald coast or just Cancale? Also, how do we get from Dinan to St. Malo or Cancale. I have heard buses are best but every website I go on for the buses seems to be in French and is confusing as we do not speak French. Would really appreciate some help so we can finalize our trip plans. Thank you.

None of these towns are very far from each other. If you can, just stay in Dinan and take a day trip. St. Malo is probably easier to reach via public transportation.

St-Malo though suffering heavy war damage is exceptional - built like a medieval fort - has a nice beach too but is such a neat town - know nothing about Cancale.

buses are best to go between Dinant and St Malo as there is no train at all I believe.

Other than information about transportation, what do you need to hear beyond that already given on your other thread?

http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...-or-dinard.cfm

You might want to consult the Michelin Green Guide to the area -- LOTS of ideas there, and not just for those who travel with a car.

Enjoy!

Saint Malo has more things happening, even if the walled part of the city is mostly a concentration of what many would consider to be tourist traps.

Cancale is more of a sleepy traditional fishing village except for the huge array of restaurants facing the port.

Hi LH,

We loved our stay at
Maison Tirel-Guerin, Brittany, FR 01133 299 89 10 46

About 10 km outside Cancal.

Highly recommended for the room, the staff, the food.

We would have loved it more if my Lady Wife hadn't been sick for 3 days.

This is from my trip report:

Off we went to see Mt St Michel (http://www.ot-montsaintmichel.com/en/accueil.htm ). HINT: Parking lot 11 is a short walk to the shuttle buses out to the town. Unfortunately, my Lady Wife, who had been fighting a cold (or something) for a week or so began to succumb. We took some photos and returned to the car.

From there we went to Le Coquillage (http://www.maisons-de-bricourt.com/l...uillage-en.php ) which was my primary purpose for the whole month-long trip.

Because, like a boxer who is no longer in fighting trim I am no longer the trencherman I once was, I had to decline “Dishes that change with the wind and the moon from O. Roellinger 135 € (emblematic dishes of the restaurant Olivier Roellinger and new creations) and The giant seafood platter and the sweets trolley (for 2 pers. min.) 68 € each.

Because Roberta was beginning to feel under the weather, we eschewed the Tasting menu (for 2 pers. min.) 71 € each. I settled for The Big Selection from the Bay 62 €, while she had a selection of various oysters.

Magnifique. Very Highly Recommended. Also very expensive.

After lunch, we went off to our hotel La Maison Tirel Guerin (http://www.tirel-guerin.com/?lang=en ) where Roberta collapsed.

The Guerin turned out to be an excellent choice: Top notch service. First-class accomodations. Excellent food. House made breads and pastries. Very Highly Recommended.

The staff was very nice, allowing Roberta to spend the next few days in bed without disturbing her. They even provided a small amount of nursing care – especially in the way of delicious chicken soup and directions to the nearest pharmacies.

The hotel is directly opposite the train stop. Don’t worry. There was no discernible noise except for the one time I went out to watch the TGV go by.

Unfortunately, I can’t tell you a thing about Brittany.
