Can you take a ferry from Dubrovnik to Hvar and other questions?
We are a family of 4 (kids ages 13 and 17) thinking of going to croatia and Slovenia during the summer time probably July of 2008. Can you take a ferry from Dubrovnik to Hvar and how long would the ferry ride be? What is the cost and is there a website? We were thinking of flying into Dubrovnik staying 2 nights then taking a ferry to Hvar. How many nights do you recommend staying in Hvar? Also is that a good island to go to with two kids? We were then thinking of taking a ferry to Split (renting a car) and then going to Plitvice National Park and then drive to Ljubljana, Slovenia and then to Bled. How far is the ferry from Hvar to Split and is there any fast boats? We would rent a car from Split and return it to Ljubljania. Is it doable to go to Lake bled for the day and stay at Ljubljania? How many nights do you recommend in Ljubljania?

Thanks for the info. I found out that the ferry to Hvar from Dubronvik takes 8 hours. So i think I will rent a car and drive to Split which I believe takes 5 hours and then take a ferry to Hvar which I think takes 1 1/2 hours. I assume that all ferries take cars? Do you have to make reservations for the ferry if you are bringing a car on? Also, are there alot of ferries going to Hvar each day? Is Hvar a good choice for a family with 2 kids (13 & 17)? If not, what island do you recommend?

We are traveling a similar route. Someone recommended to me to drive to Drevnik (about 2 hours from Dubrovnik) and take the ferry to Sucuraj, Hvar from there. The ferry only takes about 30 minutes, but you'll have to drive through Hvar. From what I can tell, the ferry runs frequently. Obviously, I haven't tried this yet, but sounds like a good suggestion!

Melissa...
I was in Slovenia and Croatia this past September. I orgininally wanted to rent a car in Bled and drop it off in Split. The drop off charge I was quoted by several different car rental companies was very expensive (at least for my budget). It ranged anywhere between $300 and $500 and that did not include the price of the car rental that was just the drop off fee! In the end I took the train from Bled to Zagreb, picked up the rental car in Zagreb and drove to Split.
We stayed in Hvar for 4 nights, right in Hvar Town, just off the main town square. I liked that location because it was very central, we did not do much exploring of the island, it was more 4 days of rest and relaxation. There seemed to be lots of tours that operate from Hvar Town that might interest kids...kayak tours and an island jeep tour come to mind.
Keep in mind the fast ferries you mentioned (between Split and Hvar) are catamarans and the ones I saw did not take cars and came in and out of the Hvar Town harbor, and they do take about 1.5 hours to reach Split.
The "regular" ferry which does accomodate cars arrives and departs from Stari Grad, which is about a 20-30 minute car or bus ride from Hvar Town. These ferries take about 2 hours to go from Hvar to Split.
I loved Slovenia and Croatia and hope you enjoy it too!
