Can you recommend a restaurant for lunch near the cathedral in Cologne and in the historic district in Heidleberg? We are a family of 5, kids ages 17, 15 and 12; 15 year old moderately picky. Nothing fancy, just good German food.

Actually, I do...there is a restaurant with both and outside and an inside setaing area (and as I recall a pasrty shop attached) directly across from the entrance to the cathedral in Cologne and I wish I could remember the name of the place.

If you face the cathedral and the LeMeridien hotel is on your right, the restaurant is directly behind you.

We had several very nice relaxing food fixes there the last time we visited.

Heidelberg's got plenty of places that will deliver exactly what you're looking for, and were I you I wouldn't spend too much time thinking about it in advance.

Two that I can vouch for are Weisser Bock (on Grosse Mantelgasse) and its sister restaurant, the Kulturbrauerei. The former is a bit nicer, whereas the latter is more casual, with big communal tables. Vetter is another casual place that's similar to Kulturbrauerei, though I found KB's food better.

Cafe Burkardt is small and informal, with a bit of a student vibe. Inexpensive, not as classically "German" as the other's I've mentioned.

Cafe Knosel is a cool place to get fancy cakes. Go to the back room for table service. They sell a candy called "the student's kiss" which is actually quite nice (if very touristy---careful you're not run over by a busload of Japanese).

All of these restaurants are right in the historic center.

Ok - this might sound ridiculous but we love a small restaurant in heidelburg and i cannot for the life of me remember its name. However, if you are looking at the city from the old bridge (that connect to the poet's walk), the restaurant is across the bridge, on the right side and is along the river. A couple owns it, he is the chef, she is the front of the house. Excellent food, great atmosphere, loved by locals. This place is literally on the river and a couple of storefronts from where the bridge connects on the 'heidelburg' side of the river. Its tucked into the corner.
