It depends where in Turkey. They are OK for beach places. Jeans are way too hot in August.

where? male or female? Do you have something between shorts and jeans? I agree that jeans will be too hot - but there are lighter weight things that are not shorts.

I (and most fine establishments) prefer a thong to shorts.

I was there for the last two weeks. I wore shorts everywhere, including into mosques. The locals, however, wear long pants/jeans.

I didn't see anybody in shorts in Turkey except at the beaches, on boats, or while hiking in Cappadocia.

Definitely not in Istanbul.

Bring a lightweight pair of pants.

I have seen a skirt-like sarong issued by the doorkeepers at mosques in Istanbul, insisting these be worn by men and women who wear shorts. Has this practice halted?

I have been to Istanbul and you will probably only see tourists in shorts, but that doesn't mean you can't wear them. I would only wear the long cargo-type shorts, not shorts that expose the thigh.

I was able to enter the Blue Mosque in my shorts. The females with me needed to cover their legs.

In Turkey in 1992. Major met area are the same most places and not really defined by one group's protocall. I recall seeing a ton of western men and women in turkey in shorts. I like to play along with the cultural rules even if I don't agree with them. I always covered collar bone, elbows and knees. Did not want to make anyone my mother's age 70 uncomfortable.

Men don't really have dress rules in Turkey. In the conservative cashcar (sp) mountains to the east you will see women swimming in full dresses and head coverings while men stand openly in their underwear. Take some dockers as suggested, you feel uncomfortable throw them on. You will show respect if on visits to mosqs you wore nice clothes. If memory serves they hand you a robe if you are not covered properly. Again, usually a rule just for women.

My husband and son wore long shorts for our visit in Istanbul this July. And so did many other tourists. It was over 110 degrees during our visit, so pants would have been extremely hot!
