i read in one or two hotel reviews on the net where guests unhappy with paying for the unsatisfactory breakfast in the hotel they are in,go to a nearby one for breakfast.

is this in general acceptable by hotels?can i stay in a cheap place and then go eat in a highly recommended place?

you can eat anywhere as long as you are willing to pay for it (and if they accept non-hotel residents). i think you need to repost a more precise question before anyone can help you.

to put it simply yes you can but your hotel may have the price included for the breakfast so you won't save anything in price at the hotel. BUT-leaving the breakfast that was so bad at the Manoir in Aix, the following morning gave me faith again with the croissants at a local cafe.

I don't understand why you would go from one hotel to another hotel for breakfast, when there are cafes open for breakfast on almost every block.

My normal instinct is to avoid hotel food entirely and try to find where local people eat.

What Komrade is saying is that if the hotel doesn't have a free breakfast, can they walk over to another hotel and have a free breakfast. Most hotels know who are their guests. Go down the street and spend a couple of dollars on pastry.

We stayed at the Manoir in Aix-les- Bains, if that'a the one you mean, 20 years ago and loved it. Can't remember what the breakfast was like and that was before they added a pool. We'd like to make that same drive again-Lyon to the Italian Riviera and always planned to stop there again. Also, we often go to another hotel for breakfast if it's not included.

I don't know that komrade was saying that he expected to pay, doesn't mention that. He only mentioned paying for it in the hotel he was staying at.

Really, can't people figure out simple things on their own, how do people manage to travel. If you want to do that, go to the hotel you want to eat at and ask them. They will either say yes or no.

Daph, the Manoir is the one in Aix-en-Provence where we stayed. Great place, it's own car parc, but the worst berakfast served in its cloisters'.
There will always be misses on any trip . Enjoy them all.

I laughed so hard I cried when i read this.of course I was going to pay!!!its just that a hotel with a highly recommended breakfast is fully booked and i was planning on at its its neighbours.

I believe that hotels that serve only breakfast--whether included or for an additional charge--are allowed to serve their guests only, not "sell" food to the general public.

So the answer would most likely be NO,it is not generally acceptable and you can not go next door and buy breakfast at another hote. But you never know until you ask the specific hotel.

Komrade.....I laughed hard when you answered that you would pay.....Then contact the hotel! Every hotel is different. Some will accept you and some won't. Unless you're specific no one can give you a definite answer without a hotel name.

Often the hotels don't have espresso so I end up going to a snack bar anyway. Usually I eat a little toast at the hotel, maybe hot chocolate. But I like watching the real world go by while at the coffee shops. After a couple days they start recognizing (and acknowledging) me and that always feels good.

First, you will probably have to ask at the hotel where you want to have breakfast. It will probably not be worth the price they will charge you ...

and it is not Christina. Certainly, it is not the handle she used to go by in the times before registration, and as Elaine said, itīs not her writing style. If she would have been asking for small, undiscovered Paris shops where you could buy French music sheets ... it would have been possible

That Christina D is not the current Christina. More to the point, though her comments may have sounded exasperated, she is a very experience traveler who provides a lot of information on places she knows, and I don't actually ever remember seeing any question she has posed, only answers.
If you don't like her tone, just go on to the next that you do like. Your orignal question wasn't clear to everyone as evidenced by the variation in responses. I still suggest going to a good cafe--once you walk out the door of your own hotel, you might as well go to a more interesting place than another hotel.
