I am trying to plan a trip for July which will include Padua, Vicenza and Verona (and probably also Bologna). I would like to pick one town as a base and do day trips and for that Padua makes the most sense. But any of those three cities would work for me. I'd like a hotel or B&B under €60 for a single (and those usually run around €100 for a double). I'm not at all fussy and 2 stars are fine, I'll even do the shared bath routine if it's only one or two other rooms. Obviously in Italy in summer AC is needed. I've searched quite a few of the usualy sites and am not finding much. The last few years I've found great places in Spain, Portugal, Italy, etc for around €50 and so was a bit surprised when I didn't turn up lots of options in this area. Can anyone help?

I love Verona as a transit hub for the daytrips as you describe. However, July is the famous opera season in Verona and hotel rooms will probably be at a premium.

A few years ago I spent 2 nights at "Casa del Pellegrino" in Padua. It is a 2 stars hotel. Ask for a room in "La dependenza" (their new building&quot. Mine was spartan but very clean and quiet.

Pvoyageuse - thanks, that looks promising. It looks to be in a great location for Padua, but not too close to the train station. Do you recall how long it took to walk there - or is the bus service convenient? Thanks

We stayed at Hotel Torcola in Verona in 2006 for 85 Euro, plus 8 E for breakfast.

This hotel is just steps from Piazza Bra.

I am sorry I can't answer your question, Isabel, I came by bus with a group.
Some people were not satisfied with their room in the main building but the "dipendenza" was brand new and very clean. But then some people were not satisfied with the dipendenza either !!!
They have a restaurant on street level.

On their site they say that it is 2 km from the station.

We stayed in the Albergo Due Mori in Vicenza. Very nice, very central, no frills.
In Padua we stayed in somewhere very near the Basilica beginning with a G but I can't remember then name!

We stayed at Casa del Pellegrino in Padua last year. Our room was big and very clean though spartan. We did have a great view of the Basilica of Saint Anthony which is accross the street. The hotel has parking, which was essential to us, and it does have an elevator. I don't remember if it had air conditioning but we where there in late March and did not need it. We stayed there for four nights and used it as a base to do a couple of day trips. The people were very nice. The restaurant is nothing to write home about but there are a lot of restaurants within walking distance. Their address is www.casadelpellegrino.com.

Even though we had a car,we did take the bus to the train station (we did a day trip to Venice by train)and the bus stop was fairly close to the hotel.

Padua is a very interesting city and it deserves at minimum a full day. Do not miss the Cappella Scrovegni (make reservations: www.cappelladegliscrovegni.it)

Thanks for the replys. That's two people recommending the Casa del Pelligrino so I'll definitly check it out. Luhimari - thanks for the info on the bus, even though 2 km isn't too far, it's nice to know there's a way to avoid a couple of extra miles every day just going to and from the train station.

I did see the Due Mori in Vicenza and it also looks possible. I guess I'm thinking Padua makes more sense since I'll be day tripping most days but if anyone wants to convince me that vicenza would be a nicer/better city to base in I'd certainly consider it.

Unfortunately the Hotel Torcola in Verona charges twice the normal price during July because of the opera. They are quite reasonable the rest of the year but even a single is well over €100 in July. So far I've rearranged my trip to avoid the world football finals in Vienna (where I originally had planned to be the last week in June) but I can't avoid the opera season in Verona since it goes from mid June to August. Oh well.

I just booked a single room w/ shared bathroom at Albergo Arena in Verona for 60 euro. It's on west of Piazza Bra, toward the river, so that's only a quick bus ride to train station or you can walk. It's a two star w/o AC, but I don't know what to expect, since I can't find any review. This is cheapest one I can find, and I'm just glad I found this. I'm staying only one night on the weekend when the opera season starts, so the hotel price is higher, and the other hotels just won't take single person for one night on weekend during opera season. I have not much of choice, because I'm flying out of Verona airport early next morning. But I think you'll have better luck finding a cheaper room at a better hotel in Vicenza or Padua.
