Camogli or Monterosso al Mare?

We will be in the CT area for 3 nights (not 4 thanks to Ira and 2Italy-LOL) in early May.

Would you stay in Camogli (Cenobio dei Dogi) and train or ferry to CT area for a day or would you stay around Monterosso (Porto Roca or La Villa degli Argentieri) and train or ferry to Camogli/SML/Portofino for a day?

Is there regular ferry service in early May? Between Camogli and CT?

Thanks for your help!
CB

If you want the CT stay in the CT. If you want the Portofino peninsula then stay there, but they are a long way apart and much different.

Bob - I get the impression that 3 nights in the CT would be too much. The differences between them is what drew us to try and attempt both.

Is it fair to say you think it's too ambitious for 3 days?

thx,
CB

I don't know about the ferry service between Camogli and the CT, but if the water is choppy, the ferry will not run at all. The last time I was at Santa Margherita, the ferry was not running one day to Portofino due to rough waters. We just went by bus.

I don't know if I have missed something in Camolgi the three times I visited there, but I don't find much to do other than walk the beachfront. And not a lot of things are open. They all close for siesta too. And I have not seen many tourists or anybody there. I have only been in May and September, so maybe the summer months are lively?

fair enough on Camogli - we really like the look of the Cenobio dei Dogi, but I haven't decided yet.

thx,

Hi comeboy; We have stayed in Camolgi three times at the Cenobio dei Dogi. It's wonderful and a 'sea view' room is a must. The two areas are different. Camolgi is a town to 'lounge' in and relax. But the train service to the CT is an easy ride. You can take the train to any one of the five towns and then walk to other towns. Sit, relax, have lunch and return to your home base on the train. The ferry service may be limited in May, but you will find a way to get to Portofino. It's only about eight miles away. If you intend to be in this area again, then staying in only one of the areas would be OK. Butif not, you can do both in three days. ENJOY Iris

3 days is perfect for the CT. It is so much more than hiking. Take the ferry boats and spend one day in Portovenere--my favorite location on that coast.

Hi cometboy; Everyone is different. Three days in the CT would not be for us. We love Camolgi and have used it as our home base. You have to decide. Ferryboats abound from many of the towns on that coast line. Try these golfoparadiso.it/ navigazionegolfodeipoeti.it/ and traghettiportofino.it/ ENJOY Iris

Thanks everyone for generously offering your much valued opinions. I'll think about it over the next day or two, then decide.

I honestly don't believe there's a bad decision to be made here.

Thanks again!

I changed out flights to Paris so we leave from Pisa instead of Rome. This recoups enough time that we can go back to the original plan of 4 nights in the CT.

Therefore, we plan to book the Cenobio dei Dogi in Camolgi. With 4 nights, we should have plenty of time to train it to the CT and do SML/Portofino, maybe even Portovenere.

It will be nice to return to a quiet and relaxing town at night.

Iris, can you suggest a couple good restaurants in Camolgi and/or SML.

Thanks!
CB

Hi CB; First, you will prabably be able to enjoy the 'happy hours' before dining. Our favorite restaurant is La Camogliese. You will find this restaurant, sitting on stilts over sand/sea. It's located at the very beginning of Camogli after you leave the hotel. Another restaurant we like is Porto Prego. That location is near the end of Camogli, where the harbor appears. It is on the left. We love Camogli. I hope it works for you. Iris

Hi

We stayed at the Cenobio dei Dogi a few years ago, it was great.

Just an FYI, Bob is right, from Camogli to the CT on the local train takes over an hour to the first town. The water was too rough for the ferries. We did it in June.

Sorry I don't remember the names of any restaurants in Camogli but, we ate in a different one every night.

The hotel Splendido in Portofino should not be missed.

Thanks Iris!

I hope we get to try at least one of your 2 suggestions.

Are there many cafes/bars in Camogli or do you mean just at the hotel?

Lewis,

We were thinking of getting an early start to the CT and spending a full day exploring with dinner somewhere. We really wouldn't mind just licking back for a bit in a quiet location. We almost always need a vacation from our typical vacations.

I've checked out the Splendido and it looks incredible. Is it as nice as Villa D'Este on Lake Como or the other incredible hotel in Positano whose name I cannot remember? Are you suggesting a drink at the bar?

thx,
CB

Le Sirenuse in Positano!!

Yes, a drink at the Speldido bar, Bellini's if I remember correctly!!

We did an Italian beach vacation a few years ago, went from the Riviera to Tuscany to the Amalfi Coast. It was the BEST vacation we ever took. If the Euro ever goes down, we'll do it again.

Enjoy your vacation!

ah yes, Le Sirenuse. Funny, I thought this hotel was too expensive for us 5 years ago. I'm spending more at every one of our hotels this time around and none are 4 or 5 star.

I spend almost as much time watching the dollar/euro exchange rate as I do planning our trip.

A couple of ticks could save (or cost us) $500.

LOL

oh well, procrastinated....I mean, researched....too long and we lost the room we wanted at Cenobio dei Dogi. Could still get a suite, but quite a bit more $$$ than we want to spend.

....had to "settle" for Hotel Laurin in SML.

I was debating between the two for several days anyway.

I'm sure we'll love the location.

bummer

Our daughter called this am - she had her wallet stolen somewhere taking a ferry between Capri and Naples. I found a couple ferry companies online that run between Capri and Naples (Caremar and NLG Navigazione) and called them both. However, no lost wallet has been reported.

I can't imagine what else I can try, but if anyone has a suggestion I would be grateful.

thx,
CB
