Calling Card - multi country?

(I've looked and can't find recent posts on this). We have the worst luck buying calling cards in Europe. Can't get them to work - and we are going to be in five countries, so would need multiple cards anyway. Is there such a thing as a multi country calling card? If so, where could we buy a reliable one? After getting burned last time, we are "twice shy" about losing our money. We will have an iphone but Verizon is too expensive. Also... these generally are for landline phones, I guess - pay phones, right? Do those even still exist over there?
