Calabria: Serrastretta and Soveria Mannelli Region

Jump to last reply

We are planning a trip to Italy in late Sept. for two weeks. We are working with a travel agent and have some plans. We arrive in Lamezia Terme, and head on down to Pizzo to spend the night. The next day we leave for Tropea for two nights and then onto Sicily for three nights. We then head back to Calabria and will be meeting relatives that I have never met before who live in the Serrastretta/Soveria Mannelli area. My 2nd cousin contacted me about a year and a half ago through genealogy research. He saw my stuff and contacted me. We've been writing back and forth through email for a year and a half and he knows we are coming.
He wanted to meet us at the airport and arrange for a stay at their home. I politely said we didn't want to impose and that we would be renting a car and staying in a hotel. I also let him know what our plans were for the first week and then the second week we would be up his way. I do hope this didn't offend him by not spending the whole 2 weeks with them. But this is our first trip to Italy -- well, really first trip overseas and we don't know when we will ever go back.
Anyway, I would like advice on dos and don'ts when visiting the relatives. I certainly want to meet them all -- there is a mess of them. But I also want to sightsee around the area they all come from. I don't want to impose, but I would love to have some or if all want to come with us on sightseeing trips that would be great.
Also I want to bring some gifts from the States for them but I don't know what to bring that they may like, so if anyone has any suggestions I would certainly appreciate that. Oh, by the way my 2nd cousin is 17 and not into sports. He lives with his father who is a widower.
Basically, I want a fun trip, meet the relatives and not offend anyone and hopefully invite them to come to the States to visit as well.
So, any suggestions would be most welcomed.
