cadiz and malaga spain info

looking for suggestions of sites to see, and places to eat local food. I was in both towns about 14 years ago. I remember both were great, but I am sure things have changed. Thanks for recommendations, or any help.

Malaga has a big castle overlooking it I believe but neither city has many individual sites and to most are not nearly the 'best' cities to spend time in in Andalusia if you've never been there. Granada and its superb Alhambra - the most intact Moorish structure in Europe - is a short enough drive over the mountains from Malaga and Cadiz is a short drive or train ride from Seville, by all accounts one of Spain's neatest cities. Cordoba also is magnificanet - a short drive or train ride from Seville.

Jerez de la Frontera is a neighbor of Cadiz and is a so-so city but one that is famous for its Andalusian Horse practices in the arena where they are trained and Sherry Houses you can tour and taste the product - the British word sherry being a corruption of the word Jerez where sherry was born or at least made famous - lots of little old ladies in Britain once practically drank the supply of sherry dry all by themselves!

So Malaga and Cadiz are IMO at best one day cities themselves but can make nice bases - even Gibralter is a possible day trip from Malaga.

I agree Malaga can be a nice base, and I think that is a charming city too.
We spent some five days in Malaga last september, with visits to Marbella, Nerja and Granada. Plus the city has many attractions, the Alcazaba, the Cathedral, the Thyssen Museum.but for us the pedestrian zone was really charming, very extended also.
We enjoyed the full stay in Malaga and the day trips. We were happy we took a hotel located just outside he train station, and less than two hundred meters from the bus station.

Enjoy!

Malaga city is genuine Andalucian atmosphere, the Roman theater just below the Moorish Alcazaba, the beautiful "one-armed" Cathedral, Picassos birth-house and the Picasso museum, the New Carmen Thyssen museum, great cafes, tapas bars and restaurants, theaters and nightlife. And Málaga is "museum city", lots have changed here in fifteen years: http://www.andalucia.com/cities/malaga/museums.htm

Three recommendations:
Meson de Cervantes, just off the Teatro Cervantes, for dinner:

Tapas at La Campana: http://11870.com/pro/la-campana-malaga

Later at night in El Pimpi, an institution in town:

We had a few days in Malaga. It was fine but did not measure up to Sevilla and Granada.
