Business trip to Zurich with Weekend in between - where to go?

Hi All,

I will be in Zurich in November teaching a workshop Wed - Fri then Mon - Wed. I have the weekend and my boyfriend will be joining me for the we - yay telecommuting!

So the question - where is a nice, romantic, not terribly expensive place to go for the weekend? It could even be day trips back and forth to Zurich - though I'm dreaming of some cozy little cabin

Also recommendations for Zurich itself since we'll be there mid week and will have the evenings together?

Thanks!!!

1) to get the cost down you need to leave Switzerland
2) I'd head for Strasbourg (its on the train) and has a medieval centre and a good B&B would be nice
3) if you must go up into the hills and also France then things get more complicated, for example there are some lovely walking hotels up on the Ballon D'alsace which would be romantic but could be pretty cold in November.

In November it will most likely be cold and rainy. It can be really depressing.

Head to Italy!

You can get the 7:09 train to Como. (check sbb.ch) It only take 3 hours and no train changes. You can stay at the Hotel firenze in Como, walking distance from the station and right in town. The minute you get thru the St Gottard pass its usually sunny.

During the week go to the Wine Boats! This is a blast - several boats docked along the lake by Burkilplatz and you can drink and sample several wines. It runs from 3 - 17 Nov.

In Zurich a favorite was Tibits on Seefeldt (pay by weight so be careful of how much you have on the plate)
And Barrique in the Neiderdorf has a fabulous wine and cheese selection.

November in the Ticino/lakes region is a gamble. My husband's aunt and uncle lived outside Lugano (about a mile from the Italian border - we used to walk over the Ponte Tresa to have dinner in Italy) and Novembers could be glorious or chilly, damp and foggy.

Como in November??? That will be rainy and chilly too. And a lot of places close for the season in the end of October.

I would stick with a city - where weathr doens;t really matter.

I lived in Zurich for many years and I am simply relaying what we used to do in November (and Dec and Jan and Feb).

If you do consider going, do check the weather before you go. I assumed that was a given. I would also check the train schedule and reserve a hotel room.

Zurich is in a bowl surrounded by hills/ mountains. It is often rainy and damp and cold and the weather sticks like that for days and days. If you stay in Zurich under those circumstances you will be slitting your wrists by Sunday when everything is closed.

In Italy you have a statistically much better chance for at least a ray of sun. I have photos from Como in Nov and Dec and Jan and Feb where it is sunny and I am wearing a light jacket.

We would often go to Como just for the day to escape the Zurich weather if it is gray and rainy.

Anyway I am just telling you my experience from several years of living there. Hope you are there during the wine boats. At least you can hang out there if its raining.

Thanks I really appreciate the input. I guess we just might have to be spontaneous I'm assuming perhaps hotels might have better rates at that time of year? What about a town in Switzerland called Appenzell? Anyone been there? Is it a good gamble for November?

Ok, time is getting near - how's the weather in Switzerland? Still looking for the top suggestion - we have it down to Zermatt, Appenzell, or Interlacken in Switzerland, or cross the border to Italy and go to Ballagip or Como. Anyone?

The next several days will be terrific - sunny (partly to mostly, depending on where you go) and cool to mild. We are heading to Lugano early tomorrow morning for the week-end, the weather will be sunny and about 14 degrees C. I was also there two weeks ago - and the weather was great then too.

Off the top of my head I think its 6 hrs to Zermatt. Too far for the weekend. You'll lose most of Sunday in travel.
Just my opinion.

Wow was I off.
I just checked and its only 3:12 to Zermatt.
Guess it just seemed like 6 hours...
Whatever you do check the weather videocam in the morning before you head out.

Thanks Queenie! Yes I think it will be a last minute "see what the weather's doing" decision! Would Zermatt be a good choice for this time of year?
