Bus from Rome to Naples to Sorrento
I'm going to Sorrento and on...in October, spending a day in Rome first then would like to take a bus from Rome to Naples to Sorrento or a taxi or maybe a private driver, from Rome to Sorrento with an hour's tour in Naples on the way. My friend and I degfinitely want to get a glimpse of Naples.
I don't want to take the train from Rome to Naples because I am concerned, from reports on message sites, that my luggage could be stored between cars and perhaps stolen.
Would appreciate any tips or help.
Thanks.

My plan in May was to take the train to Naples, visit the Arch. Museum and train to Sorrento - no luck; a train strike! So we took a 4 hr. bus trip from Rome to Sorrento (trained back to Naples for the museum on one day) - I didn't mind it as I enjoyed the countryside but my friend hated it - too cramped. Just be aware of upcoming train strikes which seem to be common.
Regarding your luggage on a train, get a seat reservation so that you can store your luggage in the rack above the seats. Makes a huge difference in comfort and safety. On a few train rides we stored our luggage between cars and I constantly worried about them, peeking in occasionally and having to sit on pull-down seats in the aisle-way (getting up everytime someone was coming down the aisle). Nothing went awry but we should have had seat reservations for all trips.

You are aware, I hope, that from Naples to Sorrento, you have to take the Circumvesuviana, a local commuter line whose station is one floor below Trenitalia's station at Napoli Centrale.
Keep an eye on your luggage on the Circumvesuviana as well.

Hi ima,
>...to Sorrento, after a couple of hours seeing some of Naples.<
You will arrive at Napoli Centrale (Pizza Garibaldi).
Drop your luggage at the staffed luggage office.
Take the metro to Piazza Cavour and follow the signs to the Archaeological Museum.
Tour the Museum.
Walk downhill (South) on Via S. M. Costantinopoli to Piazza Bellini.
Have a pizza at Pizzeria Bellini.
Continue down to Capella Sansevero to see the "Veiled Christ"
Take Via B. Croce East through Spaccanapoli back to the train station.
It's all downhill.
Enjoy your time in Naples.

I too am intersted in taking the train from Rome to Sorrento in February. Could someone please give me a link to the website of the train station. And ideas on cost and how often this train runs and total time of trip?
Thanks,

Andrea - You must take a train from Rome to Naples and then change to a local commuter train from Naples to Sorrento. The website for the Rome/Naples train is www.trenitalia.com. You can book online no more than 60 days in advance but it won't be necessary for February. If you take an ES train which is non-stop the cost will be about 23E 2nd class (includes seat reservation) one way and takes about 2 hours.
The local train (Circumvesuviana) from Naples to Sorrento is like taking a subway and the cost will be about 3E and is 60-70 minutes. After arriving at the station in Naples you go downstairs to catch the commuter train. No seat reservations available.
