Bus from montalcino to Firenze
Hi,
We are traveling from montalcino to Firenze then hopping a fast train to Salerno. The bus (114) will be taking us from montalcino to Siena where we will then take the bus (131R) from Siena to Firenze. We are very confused as to where we need to get the 131R in Siena. Will the 114 drop us close to where the 131R will pick us up?
We are using http://busfox.com/timetable/
To help us with bus schedules but it is still very confusing to someone traveling in Italy for the first time.
We traveled the reverse route (from Firenze to montalcino) and had to get a cab from where the bus dropped us in Siena to where the bus took us (at the rail station) to montalcino.
Any help is much appreciated!!

If you follow the "Orari" link at busfox site you mentioned, you get to list of all outside Siena transit http://www.tiemmespa.it/index.php/Vi...na/Extraurbano
If you look at 114R schedule, the end point for most run is "Siena F.S." the train station. If you look at 131A or 131RA, the starting point is "Siena Via Tozzi" station. They don't intersect at convenient location. You will have to connect these two by taxi or by bus, the same way you did.
Alternate is when you get to Siena train station, you can take a train to Firenze S.M.N. There are hourly no change train to Florence taking 90 minutes or another hourly train via Empoli station change to Florence taking 110 minutes. That is, two trains an hour. See www.bahn.com for schedule. For usual Siena-Florence run, the bus is faster and more convenient. But in your case, since you need to be at train stations at both end, a train, which is not the usual recommendation for this route, makes sense.
These are Regionale trains you can buy tickets up to the departure at no additional cost.

Thank you! I think I figured it out. The bus drops us at Siena FS (train station) stop. You can walk through the train station up a set of escalators and out to the Antiporto stop where you can catch the 131R to Firenze.

Alternatively, you could take a taxi from Montalcino to Buonconvento (less than 10 miles, 15-20 minutes) where you'd catch a train at 8:17a and be in Salerno at 1:40p. You'd change to the fast train at Florence.

Yes, the Montalcino bus is at the train station and the bus to Florence is at Piazza Gramsci (on via Tozzi which is a major bus hub). The escalators don't go to Piazza Gramsci. If you are bothering to go across the street (the escalators start in the mall), you might just catch the local bus (in the underground mall parking lot) to Piazza Gramsci.
Since you will already be at the train station, I would just take the train. Travel time isn't much longer and it saves the hassle of changing locations in Siena.
Be aware some of the bus runs from Montalcino that don't require a change are school runs and can be packed with kids (probably not if you are there now).
You can also catch the Sena bus in Siena to Rome Tiburtina(travel time 3 hours - about 10 departures daily) and then hop the fast train to Salerno.
