Burberry Outlet in London??
I did another search on this forum for info on Burberry. I know there is a Burberry store, but in one of the posts someone mentioned a Burberry outlet!

I looked up Chatham Place on www.streetmap.co.uk, which gives all London streets.<BR><BR>Chatham Place is in north-east London, near Hackney Central train station (not the Underground). Thank you for going to all of that trouble for me Ruth! I've copied down the info. (And the streetmap site URL)<BR><BR>Is this area a place that would be reached semi-easily via tube? Or is it regular train? Also, safety for two women traveling alone?<BR><BR>Thanks again.

You're welcome, A.C.!<BR><BR>I'm unfamiliar with transport in North London, but a look at the timetables (www.railtrack.co.uk) suggests that in fact you would do better taking the local train (not the Underground (tube)) from London Liverpool Street Station (which can be reached by tube) to Hackney Downs (7 min journey, frequent service) then walk. Hackney Central station seems less easy to reach from the central London, and is only slightly closer to the Burberry shop. As far as I can see, there are no tube stations close by. Maybe one of the London experts can help further.<BR><BR>As for safety - you are only just outside the centre of London and I wouldn't expect any particular safety issues, beyond normal awareness of your surroundings. So long as you have a map and a determined look!

By sheer coincidence, I was in Hackney last week during my London visit.<BR>I found the following very easy, assuming that the Burberry shop is within walking distance of Hackney Central train station.<BR>Take the tube to Highbury/Islington.<BR>At that tube station you can transfer to the Silverlink train. Your tube pass will work, if you have one. (A few old signs call the Silverlink the North London line, but do not confuse it with the Underground line called the Northern Line.) Once on the Silverlink train<BR>(they run aboutevery 15 minutes) you get off at the second or third stop, which is Hackney Central.<BR>The Hackney Central station is situated across from a Marks and Spencer, and one end of the station gives out onto Mare<BR>Street (Mare Road?) which is a main shopping street. After that you're on your own.

sorry<BR>one more clarification<BR>I believe that your tube pass will need to be good for zones one and two<BR>to get you to Hackney on the Silverlink. <BR>You can ask at an info office in the tube station, to be sure or maybe someone will chime in here<BR><BR>And if it interests you, the Silverlink also can get you to Kew Gardens or even Hampstead from Hackney Central

I have been to the outlet in London. Do not expect and American-style outlet that is well organized and nicely decorated. This is more akin to a warehouse. In fact, it is a warehouse. A warehouse located across the street from some public housing in Hackney. This is not meant to imply that your safety will be at issue, but that it is not as nice as Kensington or Belgravia! Also, do not go looking for that special raincoat or plaid skirt you saw in some fashion ad. While they carry a full line of Burberry shirts, ties, silk scarves, raincoats, and other clothing, it is sometimes hit and miss (but definitely cheaper than the boutique on Bond Street).<BR><BR>As for transport, the closest station is Hackney Central, and even that is a 10-15 minute walk. To do this, the best thing to do is to take the tube out to Stratford and then connect to Silverlink Rail. If you buy a tube ticket for this trip, it will work on both tube and rail and runs about GBP 3 each way. <BR><BR>The phone number for the outlet is 0181 985 3344. I recommend calling beforehand, as they keep somewhat odd hours. <BR><BR>As a final note, have you bought your London A-Z ("Ay to Zed")? BUy one while you are there. It is a book with maps of every street in London. Don't worry about looking like a tourist; it's what Londoners themselves use to get around in odd parts of town. I suggest you definitely have one when you go out to the BUrberry outlet. It made it much easier to go directly from the train to the warehouse.

Ah, yes, the Silverlink. That's the one we got on at Kew instead of the tube and had an unplanned tour to the end of the line and then a wait until it reversed itself and we got back to a stop where we could get the tube. Fortunately, my husband has a good sense of humor--his first trip to London and he realized we were lost before my daughter and I who thought we were such pros did.
