I don;t think there are any "budget" airlines operating out of Sofia (assuming that is where you want to leave from).
You can do it by night train with a connection in Thessaloniki but that journey takes about 13 hours total.
The reference library of a city near you may have the Thomas Cook European Timetable. Tables and have your trains. Athens 1656, buffet car train. Thessaloniki 2253 to 2356. In second class take a berth in a crowded 6 berth couchette. Both have locks and bolts on the compartment doors, so you are safe against travelling thieves. Sofia 0710. The fare is 78 euros with a couchette.
I am afraid I do not know about busses.
Two flights daily (one codeshare) on Olympic Airways; USD140 or so one way.
