BUDMAN: Question about your Garmin

You mentioned you had the Street Pilot. I was looking for a portable one. Can you tell me the basic difference between the Street Pilot and the Nuvi?

Basically cost & features. Here are two links. On the right-hand side gives a brief difference between models. Do you need bluetooth and/or FM traffic alerts? You may, I don't. Like, do you need heated seats for your car if you live in Florida.

That helps a lot. Thanks.

Now, I don't need the MP3, don't need Bluetooth yet but may in the future, so for me the deciding factor is how portable is it?

If I go with the Street Pilot, how easy is it to carry around, say if we take it to Europe or just want to put it out of sight when we valet park our car at home?

I would go to a store, touch/feel and test drive one or different models.

The unit has a mounting bracket to the windshield with a power cord that plugs into your cigarette lighter to keep it charged. The unit easily snaps on/off the bracket. In Europe for short stops, my wife would put it in her purse. For longer stops, you can purchase an optional carry case (shop around on line), and I would carry it with me.

In the States we just use it when traveling, for our rental car, or when my wife goes on business. Looking at the Nuvi, looks like it has a flat screen and would be easy to store in a purse, but it's a lot more expensive.

Definitely go to a Circuit City or other electronic store and personally check them out. You can also go on line to each unit and download the users manuals. If you are at all familiar with a GPS unit, this will give you a feel of the capabilities of each unit. The Nuvi costs more and does more, but again depends upon your requirements.

I just bought a new Ridgeline with a factory installed GPS that's voice activated. Have I used that feature? No.

Happy shopping, and if I can help you out in any way, just let me know.
