Considering that breakfast at the hotel that we have rented for our trip in September is quite expensive and charge 19 euro per person, does anyone know a decent place to have our breakfast for less around Dam Square?

I know the area around Singel canal because years ago I stayed around there.

Pancakes will give you a sugar high and you'll be hungry again in two hours. You need good high protein food at reasonable prices. At almost any time during the day at any bar or cafe in Holland ask for an <i>uitsmijter</i>. This is white bread topped with ham or cheese and two sunny-side up eggs. If you have this for breakfast it will keep you going well into the afternoon.

The Dutch don't eat pancakes for breakfast. Look for an 'uitsmijter', as Spaarne says.

This is _not_ for breakfast but on the pancake theme - if you are looking for somewhere inexpensive, The Pancake Bakery on Prinsengracht is an old standard. It's been there a really long time. I don't think of the pancakes as sugary there (although of course they do have some sweet ones, and keukenstroop (syrup) for some pancakes), you tend to get flavourings like spek (bacon) (yum) or ham, cheese and mushroom.
