Budget accomodation in Montreux and Lucerne
Hi All
I will be going for a 4 week solo Europe trip (female in mid 20s) and planning to spend a week in Switzerland in June. My Itinerary had my base in Switzerland as Montreux, Wengen and then moving on to Lucerne. Problem is - I am on a budget!! And it seems like there are no hostels or cheap accommodations in this area. Can anyone please help me? Below is my current itinerary and I am looking to spend less than $100 US Dollars a night in both Montreux and Lucerne. Is this even feasible? I am perfectly fine with B&Bs or youth hostels, I just need a place to sleep. Youth hostel in Montreux is sold out for my dates. I am willing to spend on a good accommodation in Wengen. If I cannot find a budget accommodation, then I have to change my base to Geneva (for Montreux) and to Zurich (for Lucerne) .
Day 1: Leave from Paris to Geneva, non-stop train takes 4 hours. Depart for Montreux right away and explore the city, hotel in Montreux
Day 2: Explore Montreux and a trip to Chillion and Vevey vineyards, hotel in montreux
Day 3: Take the golden pass train from Montreux to Interlaken and then get to Wengen, stay in Wengen
Day 4: Mannlichen to Kleinee Schidegg (KS) hike and go up to Jungfrau, stay in wengen
Day 5: Hike to Murren and Schilthorn or decide to spend time in Gimmelwald if the weather is bad, stay in wengen
Day 6: Get to Lucerne via golden pass train and spend the day exploring the lake, hotel in Lucerne
Day 7: More time in Lucerne and Weggis (option is Mt Pilatus via the lake steamers and cogwheels), hotel in Lucerne

Hi globetrotter135,
Do you mean the youth hostel in Territet? If not, go ahead and try there --
http://www.hostel.ch/en/hostels/montreux
If that is the one you've tried, try the Riviera Lodge in Vevey:
www.rivieralodge.ch
If you have no luck there, also try the Hotel Negociants (which may be just outside your budget) and the Hostellerie de Geneve, both in Vevey, and the La Rouvenaz in Montreux.
Good luck!

Thank you Swandan2000 again! Yes, I had tried both of the youth hostels and they are sold out for mid June. I am leaning towards staying in Lausanne hostels ($40 per night) and then making day trips to Vevey and Montreux. Would that be advisable?

You may want to check out a hostel in Montreux. We noticed one there that looked very nice-right on the lake. The guests were enjoying a swim in the lake which IMO would have been a bit cold in late May. Montreux is very expensive in every way but there is a large COOP food market that has some good take away items-sandwiches, cheese, yogurt, etc. to help keep meal costs down. Enjoy your trip!

Hi again,
Nah, I don't like Lausanne -- just a big city. You won't be able to afford to stay near the lake, yuk.
Try
www.bnb.ch
There are two in Montreux, three in La Tour-de-Peilz (outside Vevey), and one in Vevey. It's worth checking out.
Good luck!

Keep in mind that Switz is probably the most expensive place in Europe. The last time I was there the very short taxi ride from the airport to the hotel was about $50 (would have been about $15 or so in New York).
Have you looked at the Let's Go Guide to see if they reco anyplace? Or the Thorn Tree section of the Lonely Planet web site?

these two in Vevey:

I am not totally against Lausanne, but I do agree it is a BIG city in comparison, and the cheap places are not going to be near the lake (Ouchy), like they are in Vevey.
