I am currently planning a trip for Christmas and New Year 09/10 and need some advice!
We are flying in to Berlin for a few days, train to Dresden for a day or two, then on to Prague for Christmas Day. From there, we are on to Vienna and ultimately to Budapest, flying home on January 2nd. A 16 day trip with a few day-trips from our main cities.
So my question is... has anyone stayed in Budapest for the New Year? I am wondering if things wil be open, and how New Year is celebrated in Budapest.
Any advice would be MOST appreciated!

Paris by Color (photos)

Hi,
Sounds like a great trip. I spent Christmas in Krakow a couple of years ago and it was fantastic. Vienna before Christmas and Prague after. As for Budapest, spent a week there over Christmas last year. I went to church and an opera on Christmas day, but pretty much everything else was closed on the 24th and 25th. Expect museums and stores to be closed on 1 Jan, but there will still be plenty of tourist stuff to do (cruises and concerts). Public transport will be on very short hours, so hopefully you are staying downtown. The place should be lively and you will have a blast. Here is a good website to answer most of your questions: http://www.budapest-tourist-guide.com/new-years-in-budapest.html#trans
Thank you so much!
