Budapest and Prague Hotels

Jump to last reply

I am traveling to Budapest and Prague in June. Can anyone recommend a 3/4 star hotel within walking distance to the central areas of each of these cities? Any other pertinent information regarding these cities, favorite restaurants, must see's etc. would be appreciated.

As far as I'm concerned, the ONLY hotel to stay in in Budapest is the Marriott, with its stunning views from your own personal balcony of Gellert Hill and the Castle District all lit up golden at night, and where you can sit out on the balcony and chill after a day of sightseeing with a bottle of great red or white Hungarian wine available in the gourmet wine shops 20 feet away on the opposite side of the street. The hotel is a 2 min. walk to the shopping district, vaci utca, and a 15 min. walk to the Opera House.

And let's not talk about their daily pastry bar out in the lobby-scrumptious pastries and bowls of fresh whipped cream. In June, of course, the Marriott's outdoor bier-garten will be set up, where you can sit eat and while away some time watching the river traffic on the Danube. Oh yes, a most pleasant hotel this is, in a beautiful gem of a city.

I highly recommend the Hotel Maximilian in Prague. Very centrally located, it's a few blocks from the Old Town Square on the edge of Josefov (the old Jewish quarter). They have a great buffet breakfast.

For Prague restaurants, I liked the Restaurant David in Mala Strana, which is a little hard to find, but worth the effort. (I heard about it thru the Fodors board b/c so many people raved about it). It was pricey for Prague, but not very expensive compared to other cities in Europe.

Clementium in Old Town (just a block or two behind the square) was also good. For an inexpensive lunch, Kavarna Slavia (I think that means Cafe Slavia), by the National theater, has sandwiches, salads, etc.

Kampa Park is also very nice, probably the best restaurant in town, but extremely pricey and I'm not sure it's worth the expense. But if you have nice weather, try to get one of the tables on the top deck for a great view of the Charles Bridge. There are only 5 tables with a view so I think it would be hard to get one of those tables at normal mealtimes. I went around 2pm for a late lunch and ended up sitting there a long time because it was so nice to watch all the tourist traffic on the bridge and on the river without being in the middle of it.
