We understand that we can take an overnight sleeper train from Bucharest to Budapest. Is there someone who can recommend this and let us know how to do it?

Yes there is indeed an overnight service between Bucharest and Budapest -the EuroNight Ister night train. It takes just over 16hrs and departs Bucharest at 540pm, reaching Budapest just before 9am the following day. Prices range at £80 - £130 for a couchette - I would definitely not recommend buying a reclining seat option even though they are cheaper.
