Years ago I stayed at the Old Silent Inn just outside Haworth but am not sure you can get there by public transport. I had lunch there about three years ago, very good.

You should be aware that Haworth itself doesn't have that much to hold your interest for any length of time.

The whole of Haworth is on a steep hill - well several actually.

As for safe - unless you count falling down stairs after a few too many pints of Timothy Taylors the whole area is as safe as anywhere else you are likely to go

Thanks all - I am not adament on staying in Haworth - is there anywhere close by that would be nice to stay in...I plan to go to Fountain Abbey and/or Castle Howard. I see there is a railway too - which might be fun.

The Keighley & Worth Valley railway runs through Haworth and is a 5 mile stretch of old restored steam line. See: www.kwvr.co.uk

The surrounding towns, Bradford being the largest, each have their own features that make then worth a visit. You will be close to Skipton, Saltaire and Ilkley which are all easily accessible with a car or on trains and buses.

Both are 90 minutes drive from Haworth - if you want to see either you really need to be somewhere like York

@alanRow - I keep looking at the map and thinking that might be the best jump off point. I think prob a day is more than enough in Haworth (althou I am a huge Bronte fan). If I stayed in York again could I do a morning in each and head up to Edinburgh. In other words, 2 days York - one spent in Haworth, the other doing the one or two of the others?

If you are not driving you really do need to stay in a major hub like York. That way you can catch buses or trains to other areas for the day - or - take commercial guided day trips. Staying in remote places like Haworth will severely limit your transport options.

I am afraid the car is king for a lot of North Yorkshire. Yes, you CAN reach certain places by public transport, but that can be costly, difficult and VERY time consuming. An example is Fountains Abbey. I could get in the car and drive there from York in less than a hour. However to plan a bus trip there would take forever (and there are no train stations anywhere near).
Maybe there is a commercial trip from York as Janis suggests - I am sure the York tourist board could help you.

Castle Howard does look easier from York because Stephenson of Easingwold are running a service (not Sundays) and going via them gives you a discounted ticket into the house.

Not sure how you'd get to Haworth from York but I think it would be train via Leeds to Keighley and then bus?
I don't see how you could do Haworth, Castle Howard and Fountains in 2 days though with public transport.
