And your interests are ____

And your nightly budget is ______

And your mode of travel will be _____

And your exact time of year (even in Britain, there are multiple summer months) is _________. If it's August, your finish in Edinburgh is compromised - that's festival time and Edinburgh lodging is sparse (and the rates are far higher).

Cornwall and Scotland are two of my favourite bits of the UK.

Find a nice seaside town or port to use as a base in Cornwall. Maybe stop a couple of days in Bath on your way up/across the country. Assuming you are not going into London, you could next use either the lake District area or York as base for another couple of days. Then Scotland. I love the western coastal area and highlands (eg Skye and Applecross/Torridon) so maybe spend a few days there before finishing in Edinburgh.

But, as mentioned above it's all a bit moot until you tell us how long you will be here and how you plan to get from point to point.

As above: W/o knowing the length of your trip no one can help you really (and whether you are driving or relying on trains). And exact dates, etc . . .

Also have you been here before?

From where are you departing?

Hotels ? Or Cottage rentals?

Sorry for all the questions but this does look like a really good chance to have a great honeymoon.

some awesome IMO spots you could hit between Cornwall and Edinburgh would be Clovelly, in Devon
Bath - one of the finest looking towns in Britain
North Wales
the Lake District - one of the most popular vacation areas in england
Hadrian's Wall
and the Scottish Borders Abbey just south of Edinburgh

Highlights would be Bath, Lake District, Hadrian's Wall and the Borders Abbey if on a fairly short time.

You are going by car I presume - if not that changes the equation a whole lot.

Sorry everyone was away from the PC last week! All good suggestions!Hoping to travel by car- and looking to stay in a mixture of B&Bs and serviced apartments. Have a budget of around £150 per night.

RM67 and PalenQ I like the idea of Bath? It seems kind of expensive though, so I've been looking at staying in Bristol- found some nice apartments there- http://www.berkeleysuites.co.uk/

BigRuss- I;ve heard about the Fringe, we really want to see it but at the same time think it might be quite expensive! Is there anywhere nearby to stay, and drive into Edinburgh for the day?

It's not just the Fringe, there are a ton(ne) of festivals in Edinburgh in August.

And you're better off staying in Glasgow or an Edinburgh suburb on the rail line(s) toward town and taking the train than staying near Edinburgh and hoping to drive IN Edinburgh - the city was bad enough before it added the light rail; now, matters are worse.

Is your goal on a honeymoon to see the nicer places or do you want recommendations based on how cheap it is to stay - very different.

Choosing Bristol which does have a nicely restored old town centre and uni area over Bath is one few would make if they had to chose.

Blackpool is one of the cheapest places to stay in England and to me an amazing place - for cheap B&Bs hit Blackpool and British couples may well go to Blackpool on their honeymoons if starved of cash.

Stay in/near Stirling, or in/near Perth, or North Berwick, or Glasgow (you don't want a car in Glasgow though) . . . and take the train into Edinburgh for a full day. But for Stirling, North Berwick, Perth - you'll want to book ASAP because the 'Festival/Fringe/Tattoo' effect reaches quite a ways out from Edinburgh affecting availability.

Meant to add -- Staying in Bristol is a perfectly fine alternative to Bath. But a car is a liability in the city. Since you'll have a car you can stay anywhere. (I love LOVE Bath but seldom stay right IN the city). There are many nice small towns/villages w/i 20 or 30 minutes of Bath w/ lovely B&Bs for less $$/££ than in Bath itself. Then you can drive to one of the park&ride lots to visit Bath. Even many locals don't try to drive IN Bath - they use the park&rides.

And don't spend time in Blackpool -- it is a fun/curiosity sort of place but NOT for your honeymoon (or a first visit to the UK if that is what this is).

You are traveling at the highest of high season so I'd regretfully skip the Lake District too.

Have you said how long your whole trip is?

Also - are you flying in to the UK or do you live there now?

Bristol is a great place to stay - having been a student there, albeit 30+ years ago, i can thoroughly recommend it. An interesting city, easy access to local countryside, [eg bus or train to Bath for a day trip] and excellent theatre and concerts. I've no idea why more tourists down go there.

The Berkley Suites are new of course but the position is excellent - at the bottom of Whiteladies Road, within walking distance of Clifton, and the city, and on a very useful bus route.

It would make a very good stopping off point between Cornwall and further north, depending of course on how long you've got - I can't see anywhere how long your trip is.

As for Cornwall, [where I live] there are two places that I generally suggest as centres, Falmouth and Penzance. Both have their advantages and disadvantages but they both offer a lot of things to do and see [including those all important wet weather options] and you could easily spend week in each of them and still not run out of things to do.

if you are short of time and want just to do Cornwall and Scotland, missing out the bit in between, you can fly from Newquay to Glasgow and Edinburgh [or vice versa] on Flybe. they also fly from Bristol to Edinburgh/Glasgow.

I agree that Bristol today is a gem and often overlooked by folks - but do as annhig says also take a day trip to nearby Bath but I rather like the more workaday cities like Bristol and again the old docks area of Bristol and the Uni area are very sweet.

Great advice guys, thanks very much! I guess we wanted to see some of the nicest places, but as we're covering a lot of the UK we will need to budget in some ways.

I used to live in the UK but have been living in Oz recently.. hence why we're looking forward to revisiting all of the UK!!

I'll put in a pitch for a flat in medievel York. Lots of very nice places right in the centre (I was looking for my BIL recently), use the park and ride to get to the car (or make sure parking is part of the rental deal and go tour the monestries and country/pubs around.
