we visited rome in may, and we made
arrangements through our hotel for
the day tours. we usually made them
the day before, and there never seemed
to be a problem. the tour company which
we used, picked us up at the hotel in
a van and transported us to the main office where we paid and boarded a bus which took us to our destination.

hope you have a great time!

Do you mean trips outside of Rome, or tours within Rome?

If the latter, I am one of those who always sings the praises of an organization called Scala Reale. If you search on that name here, you will find all the past recommendations for it.

Their tours definitely need to be requested, paid, and booked in advance.
Tours include a general orientation
(Included in the fee) plus choices like
the Vatican, Forum and Colosseum, etc.
Can't recall if they have trips outside of Rome, they might. Their tours take only very small groups and they may already be fully-booked for later this month.
www.scalareale.org

Having lived and worked in Rome, I can certainly pass on information regarding tours in and around Rome. The tours outside Rome are all available with a pick-up and drop-off from your hotel. Places which are visited include, Ancient Ostia, Assisi, Tivoli, Naples, Pompeii, Sorrento to name a few!

If you are travelling to Venice, Florence, Naples or the Amalfi Coast, I can also send you some recommendations and information regarding tours.

Please feel free to contact me if you would like this information.
