I wish I had read this one before I went to Portugal, or even better, during the trip. "A Small Death in Lisbon" by Robert Wilson gives a wonderful picture of 20th century history in Portugal, especially the WWII era and the 1974 revolution. Plus I'm really enjoying all the scenes set in all the places we visited, and the description of the sardines grilling on St. Anthony's Day (not my favorite part of the trip lol). So if you are planning a trip you may want to read this one.
