Bolzano and Rapallo

I have been through Bolzano and stayed in Rapallo and do not recall any particular "sites" in either. Just nice little towns to walk around. Bolzano will show you some of the rougher mountainous area of Italy and Rapallo will take you to the sea. Their harbor is particularly nice for strolling. I enjoyed the mosaics in the pavement there. Nice little seafood restaurants. While in Rapallo you may want to take a boat trip to Portofino, Camogli, San Fructosa monastery or other ports along the Italian Riviera. Enjoy.

Hello Eric,

BOLZANO is a very attractive city and an excellent base for day-trips. The main 'sight' in the city itself is the 'ICE MAN' Museum.

For day-trips, don't miss MERANO and TRENTO, both within 40 mins by train.

You can reach some delightful villages in the Dolomites by bus from Bolzano. Head for ORTISEI in Val Gardena, which is one of the nicest. From there, don't miss the SECEDA cable-car ride above Ortisei into the ODLE range for some of the most stunning views in the Dolomites! This is a fabulous area for hiking or a picnic.

Another area for fabulous views is CAREZZA, which you can also reach by bus from Bolzano up the Val d'Ega. From Carezza there's a chairlift ride to the foot of the Catinaccio.

South of Bolzano is CALDARO (on the Wine Route), another attractive village with a lovely lake for boating nearby. There are several places for wine-tasting nearby. From Caldaro there's a mountain railway up to the Mendola Pass.

A little further afield is Lake Garda. You can reach RIVA DEL GARDA by bus from Trento.

Hope this helps ...

Steve

From the center of Bolzano there is a free shuttle bus to a nearby castle (I forget the name Castelrotto something?). The castle is covered with frescos of the Tristan and Isolde story .. a nice half-day visit in a scenic spot.

Definitely visit the Ice Man museum, we were awe-struck.

There is a nice outdoor produce market in town -- buy a picnic and take it to the big park by the river.

Hi, you can also take a cabletrain "funiculaire" up and then take a train ...one of the destination of the train is COLLALBO, a nice village and you could then take a walk (quite a bit) to see the " rock pyramids" and feel the "tyrol". This region is more germanic than italian and it seems there's less tourists there then in other parts of Italy.
I did this trip and really enjoyed the different "atmosphere" !
Enjoy

I just want to add my recommendation for the "ice man" museum in Bolzano to those you have already received. Even without the ice man this museum is worth a long visit - with him, it becomes one of the wonders of our time and should not be missed. I have been twice - the second time detouring six hours off my planned itinerary just to have a second look.
