Bologna to Florence / Florence to Positano
Hi all,
Just wanted to check on the recommended way to travel between these cities. I'm presuming train is the best but I'd like an idea of times and frequency. If it's too difficult maybe it would be best to rent a car?

Hi Plates,
From Florence you take the train to Naples and change to the Circumvesuviana commuter train to Sorrento. From there you take the SITA bus to Positano, Sponda stop.

You want the Orari for Campania
You can also hire a driver from Naples to Positano for about 80E.

The train from Bologna to Florence takes about an hour. Trains seem to run about once an hour.
The train from Florence to Naples will take about 4 hours, some require one change in Rome. They seem to run about twice an hour. You then have to either take public transport to Positano (train, bus, ferry or some combination thereof) or take a taxi or car service. By car, its about an hour, plus you get to see the spectacular coast.
I would not drive any portion of this, as I just don't think it is that fun a trip on Italian highways, and parking is hard to find and expensive along the coast. I might consider driving from Bologna to Florence, but if you will only be staying in Florence and not taking day trips, then a car is again a pain because of parking and the fact that you can't drive in many parts of central Florence.
If you drive, don't forget that gas costs US$4.05 a gallon, automatic cars are more expensive to rent, and there are drop off charges. Also, you may find that the car rental agency in Florence is not willing to let you take a car into the Naples area, due to theft, or will charge you quite a bit more for the rental.
Take a look at trenitali.it for timetables. I personally use rail.ch (for Swiss railways) which is easier to use and gives times for trains all over Europe, not just within Switzerland.

I recommend reserving car in advance from the US.
You should be able to get your train tickets one day in advance without trouble.
You can also buy them, up to 60 days in advance, from www.trenitalia.com on the Italian language site.
