BNL machines in Italy

BNL machines in Italy
I am leaving for Italy in a few days. Bank of America has told me that we can use the BNL ATMs for no transaction fees. Has anyone used them? I will be in Pesaro, Lucce and Naples, does anyone know if there are BNL machines in these three places? I was told by B of A that there are plenty in Italy. Thanks, nicholasdello

I went to maps.google.com, did a search for "Pesaro, Italy" and then did a "search nearby" for "bank." Several banks appeared, all on the main streets at the center on town. There was one BNL to the side of the main piazza, Piazza del Popolo. You could do a similar search for each city you will visit.

I would advise not using BNL's ATMs. I did in June 9, 2016 for 500 euro. I received nothing but my account in Canada was debited immediately. I went to the branch the following day with an Italian friend and was told that the matter would be cleared up within 15 business days. I thought that was outrageous but then, hey, it's Italy.
It is now August 29, 2016 and I have yet to receive anything. BNL has been ignoring my contact attempts and when they do respond they pass me off to someone else.
Today I received an email saying that the onus was on me to fix the problem through my own bank. My bank, like myself, was ignored by BNL after waiting in good faith the 15 day period.
I feel I have been robbed of 500 euro by a major European bank. It's nothing to them but a lot to me. During my holiday I had to borrow from friends. I was ashamed. Yet, BNL has no shame.
Whatever you do AVOID BNL!!

I would also avoid your bank, BTW, this is completely unacceptable. I wouldn't do business with such a bank.
I had the same thing happen in Mexico by a bank that was Santander, a major Spanish bank with chains there. I guess ATM accounts are always debited immediately, so that's nothing new. That wasn't any particular problem to me as I never have almost nothing in my acct and never withdraws that much on vacation. I just wanted my money bank. Santander debited my acct for the US$100 approximate amt I wanted to withdraw, but at the machine, an electronic notice came on the screen saying they could not dispense money and it just spit out my card. I presumed I wasn't charged, but I was.
I contacted my bank at home immediately when I returned, after checking my acct online and saw that the amount was debited from my acct (this was Charles Schwab). They investigated and refunded all money to my account within a month after the investigation was complete. Your bank should have done the same.
I never had anything to do with the Santander bank in Mexico, in general, I don't think it is a good idea for a private individuals to try to solve things like this with institutions. Of course, I didn't try to find out immediately if my acct had been debited, as there wasn't any reason to do that and I knew I'd rather have a major financial entity deal with Santander than me.
IN general, I think the law is that if a bank "ignores" some other bank's request for verification of a transaction, etc., the other bank can withdraw the money from them, but I"m not sure. I know I had no problem with getting my issue resolved. I don't think you should have been dealing with BNL at all, that may have delayed things.
Ideally, you should have more than 500 euro in your bank account if you are traveling abroad (or ever, actually).

Well, old thread or not, it is instructive to those who might want to use BofA to get cash from ATMs in Europe. I dropped my Bank of America account because of the silly fees they charge for withdrawing my money from an ATM. They may refund the $5.00 flat fee for each withdrawal when you use a partner bank, but they still charge a 3% "Foreign Exchange Fee" for the privilege. I changed to Capitol One, which charges nothing for credit card purchases, and Andrews Federal which charges nothing for use of their ATM card.

Okay. The original post is old. The content of my review, however, is not.
The ATM incident where I was robbed (this is the word until I receive my money back) of 500 euro occurred on June 9, 2016. The matter remains woefully unresolved almost 3 months after the fact.
So what exactly is your point? Clearly the bank has a track record of unreliability and malfeasance. If anything, the fact that the original post is 5 years old serves to augment my argument.
My post is current. That's all that should matter.

I don't know about the statues of limitation for filing a written error claim against a bank in Canada. If you miss that window, no one has any obligation to do anything about it.
I have had this happened to me and also again to my traveling companion just two months ago. Both got resolves the way Christina described.
The disputable discrepancy comes up in your statement with your own bank. The agent who has to verify if the amount debited from your Canadian bank account was indeed dispensed in Italy is your Canadian bank, not the Italian bank. As far as the Italian bank (or any other owners of the ATM) is concerned, the ATM "determined" it did not receive authorization to debit from your home account, so it did not give you money. No authorization, no money, no discrepancy, so case closed in their view. This seems to happen more when there is a glitch in sending authorize to dispense from the home bank such as when the Transatlantic communication link is busy. I try to withdraw money only in the morning Europe time for this reason. It takes the bank a couple of weeks to reconcile if debiting was in error.

Thanks for your response. You're making many assumptions though. Most of them are incorrect.
Dealing with my bank was precisely what we were told not to do when we went to BNL the following day. I did, as I have pointed out above, make contact with my own bank the evening of as well as the following day.
I received a BNL receipt indicating that 500 euro was debited from my account. This is not disputable. Why are you assuming the transaction was rejected. My original post indicates that the amount was debited from my account immediately after the BNL transaction.
We were specifically told by the BNL branch that balances (whatever) would need to be confirmed. I provided BNL with proof of the debited amount and they had the receipt from their own terminal. "No authorization, no money, no discrepancy, so case closed in their view." Assumptions upon assumptions. Why?
Look, the point isn't how things should work. If we lived in a perfect world, forums like this would not be necessary.
My post is a warning to those who might bank with BNL to be wary. Very wary!
