Wondering how long to plan to stay at the Blue Lagoon to get a good feel of the place. I have the option of staying there all day (a free day I have) or can go the morning before my flight (approx 3 hours). Also, how long does it take to get from the Blue Lagoon to the airport at Keflavik.....is a 2:15 bus leaving the Blue Lagoon enought time to make a 5pm flight.

With no stops the bus should get to the airport about 3PM.
I think the morning at the Blue Lagoon would be best. We did it after our flight arrived in Reykjavik. The buses seemed planned to get you to the airport so that you arrive in time for your flight. It's not far from the airport.
I've spent a couple of hours at the Blue Lagoon before catching my flight. This was in November and it was a great experience to be outside in the pale blue lagoon but although the water was hot the air temperature was very cold so we didn't dip our heads under.
I've also been in July this year and spent about 5 hours soaking, relaxing, drinking smoothies at the swim up bar, etc. A different vibe but nevertheless both experiences were enjoyed equally.
So, my choice would depend on the time of year and what I wanted to get out of the experience I guess.
Most importantly remember to slather the supplied conditioner on your hair and do not rinse it off before entering the lagoon. You can't use too much of this stuff! Reapply if you wash it off in the lagoon or your hair will be like straw for days.
Book the trip with the bus company and they will ensure you get to the airport in time but 2.15 sounds right as the airport is less than a half hour away.
I caught the airport bus from R to the lagoon and on again to the airport, very easy and I think the bus even held our lugage. Two hours did it for me, still I did manage to break the security system twice much to the confusion of the staff.

The Blue Lagoon is great. My wife and i went to Iceland the summer of 2010. Most people going to the BL go right when they get there or right before they go. its about 45 minutes from Reykjavik so it only makes sense to do it that way. We went before we were going home and spent about 1 1/2. It was awesome; however i cannot imagine being there for a whole day!!!!! Unless you are going to be in Iceland for 3 months, there is way too much to do in Iceland to be spending all day in the BL, but just my opinion.
