I will be in Istanbul for several weeks and will have 1-2 days to travel during those weeks. I have been lucky enough to travel around the world for work and one of the things I have done is collect sand and swim in every body of water I have been near. The Black Sea is only a few miles from Istanbul but are there any towns in the area there that are worth visiting for a day or two or should I just head up for a quick stop?

I would just head up for a quick stop. The easiest thing to do and the closest to Istanbul is to go to Kilyos beach in Kumköy, north of Istanbul and on the European side. You'll find a sandy beach there. Beware, the black sea is rather fresh...
