Biking in Malta
We will be in Malta for a week in June and would like to get some biking in (training for 80 mile fundraiser ride). Is it safe to ride on the roads? Any suggestions? Thanks!!

I'd say it's safe enough as long as you're away from the congested area - from St. Julians to Valletta. There's not much traffic on the interior or in the south. Wear colorful clothing so motorists can see you.

Hi Dgodkin,
Overall, I'd agree with Adrienne's remarks above. I cycle, when I can, but I live beyond the congested area and can get out onto smaller byways easily. However, even these roads do tend to see motorist madly whizzing along, irrespective of sunken roads, blind corners etc, so please never cycle two abreast even if it looks like a nice quiet country lane. Cycling can be challenging - very steep uphills towards Dingli Cliffs, and the North. Gozo is worth a trip - again, it's all up and down! For some general cycling info, and links to various clubs here (it is a sport on the increase), see this link: http://www.maltainsideout.com/catego...style/cycling/

Hi,
Just noted that you are interested in fund-raiser cycling. So, it might be nice to hook up with these guys in Malta - Betfair Lifecycle Challenge. The gaming co based here does a mega annual race across Europe and trains here in Malta. Perhaps you could join them while you're over? They will also have lots of tips about the lie of the land here, and prepping for a fundraising cycle. http://www.lifecyclechallenge.com/

You must be very carefull when biking in Malta on the road. Maltese drivers are not used to have bikes on their roads so they dont really pay attention to them. Some bad accidents happen lately unfortunalty ....
Bike in the countryside, thats the best place to go. And if you have to use the roads, be extremly carefull !
