Beyond Dublin-Favorite Small towns or maybe Galway?

Looking for advice on getting away from Dublin to see a smaller town. Two college guys will probably just be site seeing and hanging out in pubs. Are there any smaller towns to see and how to get there please. Also, I've heard great things about Galway but only have three days/nights so is it worth going to Galway for one of them? Thanks for any advice!!

We really enjoyed Galway. Will you be driving? Some of the smaller towns are not easy to get to without a car.

Galway is always worth a trip,, BUT you only have 3 days all in? and based in Dublin. To be honest I would just have your 1st night in Bray, walk Bray Head https://fatstevewalks.wordpress.com/...ray-head-walk/ have the night out http://www.bray.ie/visit-bray/night-life/ and then do Dublin.

I missed the three nights part, which is really only two full days. A train to Galway takes almost 2 /12 hours, and the bus takes almost three hours. You could possibly take a day trip there, but it would consume a lot of your limited time.

Yes, three days is not much time, I was hoping there was some small town or some countryside within a hour or so to see something other than the big city.
Bray (&walk) look very nice but I failed to mention this trip is in December so maybe not the best time for the walk. Thank you both for the reply's!

Consider the train into Kildare. There's a nice Cathedral, a Round Tower that you can climb to the top of (one of only three in the world!), a goodly number of excellent pubs and a lively music scene.
As mentioned earlier, the Dart runs to Bray and then on, along the Cliffwalk, to Greystones. You can enjoy the views from the warmth and comfort of the train car! Both towns might be a bit quiet that time of the year, though.

Johnnie Fox's Public House, in the Dublin Mountains has a Shuttle Bus that runs out of Dublin, if you're looking for a little scenery to go along with music, food and a pint.

Greystones is a nice place and Howth is north of Dublin. At least gets you out of the city a bit but bet you will find enough to do for three nights in the city.
