Better days for Americans abroad

Congratulations to Obama! I'm looking forward to holding my head up high as an American tourist in Europe.

I join you in congratulating the new president.

As for holding my head high in Europe, nothing new to that. I've always traveled as a proud American. Indeed, I wonder how one travels otherwise?

I'm sorry - but this has to be about the dumbest thing I've read on here - ever. So -- have you been slinking around w/ your head hanging down???

I've had many conversations with Europeans (and Canadians) about the sad state of global affairs brought about by the Bush administration. I'm sure this is Andeesue's point as well.

There's no question that the international community sees Obama's election as a ray of hope for the world at large.

I totally understand what Andeesue meant. I will never forget sitting next to a couple from Scotland in a Paris restaurant. We had a very nice conversation during which they asked me "why in the world did your country elect someone like George Bush?" Good question.

But my God folks - What on Earth does that have to do w/ holding one's head up??

I lived in Europe for several years. Whoever was in the White House didn't affect my one-on-one interactions w/ almost anyone.

Really? Not wanting to get political, but where have you been the last 8 years?

The election of Obama as the 44th President, is like a breath of fresh air...

Well, I hope we didn't do that to you. You were welcome anyway.

Well, being Irish, I couldn't travel as a proud American.

I don't travel as a proud Irishman; I travel as me, and I happen to be Irish.

Can't see why things will be better - they'll still shout, still stand in large groups in the middle of the pavement, still will moan about the prices and will still wear white sneakers

Large groups standing still in the middle of the pavement, or stopping at the bottom or top of an elevator is not only an American thing. Very common here in Switzerland and it drives me nuts.

Judging by the these comments that you just made, I can just imagine the opinion that they instantly formed of you.

Sure the Europeans will love being the World's only Super Power now. No competition as this knucklehead panders and bows at the feet of anyone that's a military or economic threat to the US. I plan on giving this Leftist as much support and time to get his policies enacted as you folks gave Mr. Bush. Yeah, this guy's a real unifier.

The president has little to do with anything. It's the "ugly American" perception Europeans have of us. The times I was not proud to be an American were when American tourists are loud, obnoxious, and pointing out to everyone that they are Americans and should be treated differently from everyone else. We try to blend into the fabric of European culture, not assault it! Try traveling as a local would in Europe...you will find a rich, rewarding experience awaits.

What in the world do you mean by that? Janis is simply saying she doesn't wear her politics on her sleeve and it doesn't affect her day-to-day interactions. Why would anyone form an unfavorable opinion of her under given those conditions?

"I plan on giving this Leftist as much support and time to get his policies enacted as you folks gave Mr. Bush."

Apart from a handful of marginalia - like the Free Trade Agreeement with Korea - Bush got every single one of his policies enacted.

That was his big mistake. Never in the course of human history has a politician convinced of the uselessness of governments devoted so much foreign taxpayers' money to proving just how right he was.
