There is no overnight train between Nice and Venice.
It's really up to you to decide whether you want to fly or to take the train. The train ride takes about 9 hrs and costs about 80 EUR. The train may be better if you plan to visit some of the many gems along the train itinerary.

Nice to Ventimiglia by local train costs 7 euros, every 30 minutes, journey time 48 minutes, just buy at the station.
Ventimiglia to Venice should be pre-booked at www.trenitalia.com, booking opens 90-odd days ahead and you can find Super-Economy fares from just 19 euros if you're lucky.
The ride along the Ligurian coastline on the train is lovely!

We looked into the comparisons between air and train travel from Nice to Venice last August. While the train journey would probably have been lovely, we decided that the hassle of changing trains with our luggage was more than we wanted to do on that particular trip.
We went for Easyjet flight - no problems, but just make sure that your hand luggage consists of only one piece i.e. everything (including handbag, hat etc) must fit inside that one bag.
We did have some hilarious entertainment watching the young ladies on earlier flights trying desperately - by several devious methods including tears - to get the young man on gate duty to wave the rule for them . . . with absolutely no success! Once on board you can remove anything from your bag that you want to use during the flight.
That rule made loading the plane a quick process - everyone's hand luggage fitted directly over their own seat, so we were sitting down in double quick time. Di
