Best way to see Durnstein on MelkAbbey, Danube day trip

I am leaving for Vienna in 3 days. I have done a search on this day trip and have decided that we want to leave Vienna on the 8:20 train to Melk.

Next, we would tour Melk abbey, see a little of Melk and take the boat to Durnstein. From what I read, if we do this we would need to walk about 5 miles from Durnstein to Krems in order to take the train back to Vienna. I am not sure that I will be able to do this walk.

My question is: Should I skip Durnstein and just get off the boat at Krems or will taxis be available?

We plan on going on May 1, but I have checked and Melk is open, and the boats are operating. I just don't know if the holiday may affect taxi availability.

tleford: Rent a bike before you board the boat and bike back when you are done. It is a delightful ride along the river and not difficult.
Melk Abbey is fantastic, the village quaint and you will enjoy the very pretty river villages of Durnstein and Krems. Have a great trip.

Thanks, That sounds like a good idea. I had read about bikes, but wasn't sure if you could rent them one way or take them on the boat.

Why pedal when you can ride? I do not know about any taxis in Durnstein- but frequent local train service runs between Durnstein and Krems. A bus runs also. This would give you much more time to sightsee and guarantee your arrival in Krems at a specific time to connect back to Vienna.
The train trip would only take a few minutes, and makes for an easy connection with the train to Vienna in the same station in Krems.- usually on the next track.
The Durnstein train station is located at the east end of Durnstein ( look for sign -Bahnhof ) check austrian rail website www.oebb.at: It can be accessed in english. You want Durnstein in the Wachau and Krems on the Donau ( Danube)
May 1 is a Holiday in Austria- expect many travelers if you go that day.Another day could be better if possible.

Thanks for the tips. It will probably be easy to figure out once I'm there.

I plan on getting the kombi ticket, and didn't know there was train and bus service from Durnstein to Krems.

I will just see what we feel like doing when I get there now that I know my options. I just didn't want to get off the boat and have no easy way back.

Unfortunately, May 1 is the day that works out for us to take this trip. The weather looks bad, maybe that will keep some people home.

Thanks for the help.
