Best way to go about renting a car in Europe?

We will need a rental car for exactly one week, starting next Sunday, the 26th through July 3rd. Idealy, we would like to pick up the car in Amsterdam and drop it off in Munich, *but* I've heard there could be a hefty fee for picking up in one country and dropping off in another. I've already been to autoeurope.com- any other websites I should try? What about discounts, through Sam's, Costco, etc...?

Thanks for your help!
Lauren

Hi TX,

I've not heard of anyone who doesn't charge a hefty fee for pickup in one country and dropoff in another.

What's your planned itinerary?

Ira asks a very good question.

I assume you are renting the car for more than just getting from A-Dam to Munich, or are you?

Another possibility: take an ICE from A-Dam to Cologne and rent the car there: end of drop off charge in another country issue.

The advice from Intrepid1 is right on target.

Does your itinerary include going through (some of) France now? or none at all? You can rent German cars in both Strasbourg, France and at Basel (CH/F/D) airport.

See also my reply to one of your other questions about ideas for Amsterdam to Bavaria...

Best wishes,

Rex

I think the train from A'dam to Colonge is exactly what we need to do, thanks!
Rex, I did see your response, very helpful! Our itinerary is as follows,
3-4 days in A'dam
train to Colonge, pick up car. About 6 days to get to Munich (too little, too much????)
Drop off car in Munich.
Take day trip to Dacheu & Salzburg (or, should we spend one night in Salzburg??)
Fly out of Munich.
Thoughts?

I am so excited I can hardly stand it!!! I must work on accomodations 2nite! And, car rental, of course.

I'd recommend making an overnight in Salzburg.

OK...so that I can tell my "friend" the facts... IF we rented a car in Munich... we can't leisurely drive down to St. Raphael in France - staying in Genoa, Turin, (I was pushing for Parma too)...
without it being horrendously expensive.

Go to www.gemut.com to find the 800 number to phone for car rentals. Shut down your computer this minute and phone the number. You'll probably reach Andrew Bestor, who uses AutoEurope. He will give you a quote, but you should compare it with AutoEurope directly by phoning their 800 number, available on their website at www.autoeurope.com. The longer you wait to make your car rez, the fewer choices you will have. To avoid a hefty fee for picking up in one country and dropping off in another, you may want to train to your first German locale and pick up the car there.
