best way to get to Italy from Greece
Hi all,
I am traveling to Greece this July with my husband and 3 kids. We have two and a half weeks to vacation and have never been to Europe. I would like to go to Greece for 1 week then travel to Italy for a few days and fly home to Califonia from Italy. What did you find was the best (and of course cheapest and fastest since I have the 3 kids) way to go from Greece to Italy? I have been looking to go to Crete, Greece first for one week, maybe one other island for 3 days or so, then to Italy. But it seems that if we fly to Italy we would have to go from Athens to Rome, so is Crete to Athens an easy route? Any advice or tips?
Thanks so much,
Reheia Stevenson

Since you included the fastest that is obviously going to involve air travel if there is any available.
Don't forget that even though a ferry may start out being cheaper if you are forced to add accommodations and food the price is going to rise. How valuable is your time which is not filled with possibly cranky kids?
For budget airfares look at www.skyscanner.com and www.whichbudget.com

Crete [or any other Greek island] to Athens is the easiest route, Reheia.
You should have no problem finding flights for both legs, save that you are leaving it quite late.
kayak.com should be able to find you the cheapest options.
you might also be able to fly straight from Crete to Rome - have you thought of that?

as I thought, you can fly direct with easy jet from Heraklion to Roma Fiumicino, and with Ryanair from Chania to Roma Ciampino; also Aegean Airlines do the Heraklion to Fiumicino route.
I would get booking now!

I would choose Easyjet, too. Just make sure you stick to their baggage restrictions, or you'll have to pay extra. Also check carefully to make sure that they fly Heraklion-Crete on the day (s) you're looking for. And yes, book ASAP! These flights tend to sell out fast!

There are direct flights from both Heraklion and Chania to many Italian airports. But be aware that in less than 1 week, you cannot really visit Italy.
BTW: our kids preferred the Patras - Ancona resp Venice ferry by far to the flight. To eat at a ship's restaurant, to sleep in a cabine, to swim in a ship's pool and to "discover" the whole vessel was just an adventure for them.
