Best way to get from East Coast to Naples and back

Best way to get from East Coast to Naples and back
We've looked at multiple airlines, and thought leaving from BOS, connecting in London (Heathrow) and then on to Naples to destination Positano would work. The first leg is British Air. The second leg is BMI.
Someone has told me that BMI only has one flight, and if we miss it, we are out of luck.
With connections being what they are, I'm searching for other options. Someone else advised Lufthansa, but they only have one flight on the way back at 8:10am from Naples - so if we miss that....
The other airlines I've looked at have times in beween flights of 10 hrs plus. Not really what we want. Nor do we want only an hour between flights, as we had on our last trips where we had to race through an airport we weren't familiar with and barely made our connecting flight.
Maybe there is no better option, but if someone has one, please send!

Is this true even if you connect through Milan?
I wold have thought they have a bunch of flights to/fro Naples.
(I don;t reco Rome - becuase from there you would relaly need to train/drive to Naples and back - althoughh inthe long run that ight be your most cost effective and convenient method.)

After our experiences, we are not looking for cheapest fare, we are looking for best connections.
Ira, we are not fans of Air France given our recent experience with them (they canceled our flight to Venice and never called to tell us, nor did they seem to care when we arrived at the airport and were horrified at what had happenend - luckily we were at the airport 4 hrs early and were able to make a flight to NYC and then to Venice.) Also, it appears their only flights from Naples out allow only 55 min between connections. This is not enough time, given their airport. Airplane to bus, to terminal, and run to connection. We barely made it last time with an hour.
I'm wondering, though not happy about considering, if it would be best to fly to Rome and train to Naples. We definitely do not want to drive.
If we decide to go with British Air, and miss the BMI connection, what choices do we have from Heathrow.
I would hate to have to pay for a flight from London to Naples because BA was late and we missed BMI.
I abosultely LOVE to travel, but I'll tell ya, air travel has my nerves a bit frazzled lately with all the problems. There MUST be an easier way!!!!

I just looked at capri.net and see that the last ferry from Positano for Capri leaves at 14:00 hrs.
If we can't get a flight that gets into Naples in time to get us to Positano by 2pm, what are our alternatives - getting a ferry out of Sorrento??? Do those run later?

If your BA flight was late and you missed the bmi connection, you wouldn't necessarily have to pay for a new ticket to Naples, as long as you purchased the whole itinerary as one ticket (BOS-NAP). The airline is responsible for getting you there, but it could end up being very inconvenient - routing through multiple cities, staying over a night in London, etc - if there are no other non-stop flights that day. You might look to see what other flights exist, if any, from LHR to NAP later that day, on any airline.
Also, note that BA arrives in T4 at LHR, while bmi departs from T1. I've connected at LHR before, but I've never connected between T1 and T4. Perhaps others can advise.
If you are arriving at NAP and going directly to Capri, why are you doing it from Positano? Why not take a ferry directly from Naples to Capri? They run quite frequently.

We've flown to Naples a few times from Gatwick on British Airways. What are these connections like? In the past, we've only had a few hours wait between flights, but it was enough so that we weren't crazed trying to get to Gatwick in time.
On one occasion, due to weather out of NYC, we DID miss an earlier BA flight, but were put on the next one out of Gatwick with no charge. Our itinerary did have all of our tickets linked together.

Don't know what I was thinking - yes, we are going first to Capri from Naples.
The BA flights that I saw on Orbitz fly into Heathrow, not Gatwick. We are flying from Boston, not NY - maybe that's why.
That's a good idea about checking flights out of London in case we miss.
Does anyone know how bad it is to get from T1 to T4 at Heathrow? Are the terminals physically not connected?
What about flying to Rome and training to Naples? Again, no direct flight to Rome from Boston, but there might be more from Boston to Rome if there's some mishap and they cancel our flight out or something like happened on our trip to Venice.

What I was suggesting is to fly Boston-LHR ( Heathrow) then take the airport shuttle to Gatwick, or taxi to Gatwick for your flight to Naples. Just leave enough time to get between the two airports. By taxi, it usually takes us about 45 minutes or so with traffic.
If this is unworkable for you, you might want to check out Boston-Milan, Milan- Naples. I'm pretty sure that there is nonstop service between Boston-Milan on Alitalia, and maybe one other carrier.
Of course you can always fly into Rome and train to Naples, but this does make for a very long travel day, esp. with luggage in tow.
Anyway, good luck!

Last summer flew to Naples from Seattle on Delta: Seattle to JFK, on to Rome on Delta, then switched to partner Alitalia. No problems.
Ferried over to Capri for 3 nights. Took the ferry from Capri to Sorrento. You can then ferry to Positano or take the bus. (The ferry from Capri to Positano doesn't leave until the afternoon so we did the roundabout route through Sorrento.)

I think the problem is that airfares for May 2006 are not yet out, so alot of the better ones are not showing.
I just found the Alitalia Boston to Milan/Rome - then to Naples, and called them about it today. As it gets closer, I will try some of the other airlines.
How is Alitalia to fly?
