best way from calabria to positano
Hi - do you recommend taking a train from calabria to naples or sorrento and then taking a hydrofoil to positano
OR
should we fly from Calabria to Naples and then take the hydrofoil to Positano??
What's the easiest way?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I guess you don't have a car, which is unfortunate as it is the best way to tour Calabria. Where in Calabria will you be? There may be a flight from Reggio di Calabria to Naples but I would imagine it would be expensive. I don't know what airlines are flying out of Lamizia at the present time. I would take the train to Salerno and a hydrofoil to Positano from Salerno.

we are staying with family in calabria. I heard it is better to take the train into salerno than naples - is this true? I've gone to trenitalia.com's web site but it's a bit confusing on how to purchase a ticket. Any advice?

You can take a train from Napoli Centrale train station to Tropea (click/cut and paste this link for train times: http://orario.trenitalia.com/b2c/Tim...p;channel=tcom It takes 5 hours.
Alternatively, since Salerno is closer to Positano, you could take the train from Salerno to Tropea and save yourself 1 hour on the trip: http://orario.trenitalia.com/b2c/Tim...p;channel=tcom
Not sure if Tropea is where you wanted to go, but that is the city stop on the train route. Perhaps your family can come to Tropea to pick you up? I don't think you need to fly, unless you wish to.

actually I am trying to get from Calabria to Positano and I was thinking of taking a train from Villa S. Giovanni (near where I will be) and going to Salerno. Then from Salerno take the hydrofoil to Positano? I visited Italia Rail's web site and it would cost me $81.00 for 2 tickets, 3 hour ride, 2nd class. Or is it cheaper to buy the train ticket when in Italy THANK YOU!!!

Hi - I'm back and just wanted to share with you my trip experience. We took the train from Calabria and bought the tickets online the night before and picked up the tickets at the train station with no problem. My only word of advice is TRAVEL FIRST CLASS unless you want to be in a non air conditioned cart, standing. It is worth the price and very relaxing. If you're going to Positano, go through Sorrento and not Napoli. There wasn't much traffic and it was a short walk to the port from the train station. The boat ride was BEAUTIFUL and something I highly recommend to everyone as part of the "Amalfi Coast experience".

I just returned from Italy myself (4 days ago) and took the train all the way back up from Sicily to Sorrento, via Napoli. I bought my tickets the day of at the train station for 2nd class seating and was in an air-conditioned room/seating car...I am not sure why your train was standing room only and no A/C. Indeed, I would agree with you, the coastal views are wonderful and certainly made the trip more interesting.

Welcome to Fodors Ceciliak. You may not have noticed the thread you topped is fifteen years old. I seriously doubt Indovina will see your post since she hasn't been on Fodors in 8 years. If you have some specific questions it would be better to start a new thread of your own
