what is the best way (fastest, easiest, most affordable) to get from Rome to Praiano/Positano?

I will be traveling on A Thurs in Sept from Rome's FCO airport to my hotel in either Praiano or Positano and I would love recommendations for the fastest and most affordable option for making this trip. thanks!

Fastest/easiest and most affordable do not go together in this case.

Fastest/Easiest: train to Naples and take a private driver to Positano(100 euros or more for the driver).

Most affordable: Train to Salerno, then ferry to Positano. If the ferries aren't running, train to Naples, regional train to Sorrento, then take the bus to Positano (I think this took us about 6 hours). I think I've also seen people post about a bus from Rome, but don't know anything about that. It might be the easiest and most affordable, but not the fastest.

I've done the affordable way and the easiest way, and I recommend the driver if its in your budget.

If you can't afford a limo, the train to Salerno and the ferry is much nicer than going through Naples.

You can leave the ferry at Amalfi and take the SITA bus to Praiano. It's easier than going all the way to Positano.

I’ve not used the bus, however, per the Onda Verde website, there is a bus service that runs from Tributina Station in Rome down to the Amalfi Coast. I think this service only runs through peak season – don’t know whether it continues through all or only a portion of September.

On Thursday, September 25 (and presumably every other Thursday in September), there are buses that leave from Roma Tiburtina bus station at 7:00 am and 3:00 pm; they arrive at 10:45 am and 7:00 pm in Sorrento.

Roma Tiburtina bus station is at the Roma Tiburtina train station, to which you can take a local train (*not* the Leonardo Express) from Fiumicino.

There is a bus from Rome's FCO to Salerno, but it doesn't leave until 3:20. Cost is 12.5e one way .

The Marozzi bus to Sorrento is year round, but the Marozzi to Positano is seasonal.

LizaMarie - The Marozzi bus to Positano/Praiano runs until end of September.

It's NOT an option for you from FCO, however (- unless you can reach Roma Tiburtina for 07.00).


If you are looking for a budget option you could catch the 15.00 Marozzi bus Zerlina mentions as far as Sorrento (- arr. 19.00; € 17) - then catch an onward Sorrento-Positano/Praiano (Sita) bus.

Otherwise your other public transport options are by train from Roma Termini via Naples or Salerno as mentioned above.

P.S. If you are travelling back to Rome before the end of Sept you could use Marozzi for the return leg (- dep. Positano 16.10; € 20)

lloks like I am going to fly into FCO and just stay in Rome first. Then take the 7 am marozzi bus to Positano via Sorrento. will most likely now being staying in Positano as it is so much easier. Will do the same for my return trip back to Rome the night before my flight home. Thanks to all for your help!

I think that it is easier to stay in Praiano.

IIRC, the SITA bus from Sorrento stops at the top of Positano. It goes through Praiano.

You can take the Orange bus from Praiano to the docks at Positano, if you are planning a ferry ride.

Haven't been on in a loong time, but can't resist putting in my 2 cents. Following Ira's advice and traveling the same week as you (in Sept. 07), we took the train from Rome to Salerno then the ferry to Positano. We stayed at Hotel Pincio in Rome for our 1st night - charming hotel/owner, not charming, but more than adequate rooms at reasonable price, and location right near Spanish Steps and Termini can't be beat. The train to the ferry were the perfect transition and introduction to the Amalfi Coast. The only blunder was when we got off the ferry in Positano we bee-lined up the wrong set of stairs and got lost - ended up paying 30 euro for a cab to go 8km!! The rest of day had been perfect up to then - and arriving at in Praiano at sunset rounded out the journey beautifully.

So I should add, that if we'd known where to go in Positano - we would've made it easily to Praiano on a SITA bus or taken a water taxi for just a few euro. I would do it all the same - except for getting lost. It was very enjoyable and affordable.

We will be arriving at FCO at 1:10pm and need to get to Praiano that night.

I am really leaning toward taking the Buono Tourist bus to Salerno (or wherever makes the most sense) and then a taxi to Praiano. Any guesses on the ease of finding a taxi to do this and the approximate price for the taxi?

Would you suggest this if we *have* to get to Praiano that evening, meaning that if for some reason our flight is delayed and we miss the bus, we need to scramble to get the train to Naples and then a driver to Praiano from there...

We have to attend a wedding at noon the following day.
