Best travel route Italy

Best travel route Italy
I am considering a trip to Matera (Basilicata). from the U.S. Can anyone advise the most efficient way to get there? Through which city that serves international airlines? Or change of planes where?

I don't have any experience with flying into Bari, but have flown from Rome to Brindisi and rented a car there, and drove the approximate route you're talking about. Fairly easy trip, though you have to drive through the Taranto area. I would guess your drive would take between 90 minutes and 2 hours. That's longer than from Bari, but flight schedules to Brindisi may be more convenient than to Bari.
Brindisi has a medium-size manageable airport with several rental-car outlets onsite.

From the US, international flights mainly arrive Rome (FCO) and Milan (MXP). There are a few flights to Venice and seasonal Delta flights to Pisa.
Since you will have to change planes somewhere in Europe, I wouldn't concern yourself with the first airport being in Italy. You didn't list your departure city, but certain airlines have certain cities in Europe for hubs. It will likely make more sense to fly US to hub (non-stop) and catch a flight on to Bari or Brindisi. For example, Delta has Amsterdam as a major hub so you might find it easiest to fly US/AMS and then AMS/Brindisi.

Fly into Rome. Spend a few days. Train to Bari, then on to Matera. Worked for me (except for not knowing to change trains in Altamura, but that was only a minor snafu and I got to see a small slice of . . . Gravina!).
